Just because the title is decided doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to play for.
Wednesdays action marks the penultimate match day of the Premier League season, before the grand finale on Sunday. There can still be substantial movement in the table on the final day of the season, both at the bottom and in the relegation zone.
The opportunity for Champions League was there for Manchester United on Tuesday, but they squandered a chance to surpass rivals City with a disappointing loss to West Ham. United can still sneak above local rivals for the final UCL spot, but a City victory over Swansea could put the fourth position out of reach.
Chelsea have two big matchups to close the season, first against Liverpool and then hosting Leicester. This could have been a dramatic week for the Blues, but instead they find themselves clinching the worst-ever finish for a reigning Premier League champion.
At the bottom, several teams have made late runs to push themselves out of relegation. As it stands Sunderland have done just enough, having taken eight points from their last four matches to pull ahead of Newcastle, who have secured relegation. They’ve gotten help from veteran Jermain Defoe, who has been recommended by his manager for a spot at EURO 2016.
