Before the main course that is the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, Churchill Downs will offer a worthy appetizer on Friday with the 2016 Kentucky Oaks.
There will be 12 races throughout the day, culminating with the $1 million Grade 1 stakes, the most lucrative race for three-year-old fillies.
Winners of the Grade 1 stakes in the past include Rags to Riches and Rachel Alexandra, who both went on to claim victories at a Triple Crown race (Rags to Riches at the 2007 Belmont, Rachel Alexandra at the 2009 Preakness). The latter has a connection to this year’s race, as its offspring, Rachel’s Valentina, enters as the 7-2 morning line favorite in the main event.
The biggest challengers for Rachel’s Valentina figure to be Weep No More (9-2), Lewis Bay (6-1) and Cathryn Sophia (5-1).
