La Liga is set to exert their dominance over European football, with only Liverpool left to stand in their way. An all-Spanish Champions League final is set for Milan, and Sevilla are one victory away from becoming the first club to win Europa League three straight years. It will also be the fifth time the club has won Europe’s secondary competition since 2006.
Liverpool have won five European Cups including three UEFA Cups, and have never lost a European Cup final. But the last time they won this competition was 2001, long before Sevilla’s successes began.
Los Rojiblancos, who also have a date with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, haven’t had an easy time in their last two finals. In 2014, they failed to score after 120 minutes against Benfica but won 4-2 in a penalty shootout. The 2015 final was against small club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, who led twice but fell in the 73rd minute to a Carlos Bacca winner.
So Sevilla have struggled in their past two finals against smaller clubs, and enter the final with one win in their last five appearances. Liverpool have won three straight, but that has mostly been with a tinkered lineup as Klopp prepares for the final. Liverpool is a slight favorite for Wednesday but the spread is even, meaning the 2016 final could go either way.
