Sevilla could make history Wednesday, as they go for the first-ever 3-peat of the UEFA Europa League. The little brother of Champions League isn’t the most glamorous tournament in Europe, but Sevilla has managed to win it four times in the last decade, including the past two seasons.
But while Sevilla deserve credit for their trophies, Wednesday will present the toughest challenge yet in the competition for Unai Emery’s side. In 2014, Sevilla needed penalties to defeat Portugese club Benfica after a scoreless 120 minutes. In 2015 Sevilla narrowly defeated Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, after the small Ukrainian club went ahead after six minutes.
Neither of those clubs had Jurgen Klopp at the help, and neither of them have the talent of Liverpool. The Reds have come from behind in key matches in this competition, most notably the 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund. But victory in the final would be a breakthrough for Klopp, who has lost his last four appearances in a cup final.
The final is Switzerland is the season finale for Liverpool, who will have played a whopping 63 matches this season. The season isn’t over for Sevilla, however, who have a Copa del Rey final scheduled for the weekend against Barcelona.
