Barcelona easily handled Granada 2-0 on La Liga’s final day, securing their third league title in four seasons. Real Madrid were also victorious in their final fixture, and finish the season one behind behind Barca.
Barcelona looked to dominate La Liga this season, with a campaign that included a 39-match unbeaten run. The trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez proved nearly unstoppable as the trio combined for 87 domestic goals heading into the final day.
Halfway through the season, Real Madrid was more associated with “collapse” than “contender.” But the firing of Rafa Benitez ushered in the Zinedine Zidane era, and Madrid look to close the season on a 12-game winning streak. The club have won 16 of 19 under Zidane in La Liga, and have advanced to the Champions League final. That surge put them one point behind Barcelona heading into the season’s final day.
All season, it looked like Atletico Madrid would be the ones to knock off Barcelona. Diego Simeone’s side stayed tight with Barcelona as best they could, but fell in the season’s penultimate weekend against relegation side Levante. Atletico had three straight 1-0 victories heading into Leavante, and they continued to lack offense in a 2-1 defeat. The Mattressers can now lookahead to the Champions League final May 28th against Real Madrid.
