WWE Extreme Rules 2016: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know


Things are always bound to get extreme in the WWE. Now that we’ve arrived on May 22, the most intense rivalries will get as hardcore as possible at Extreme Rules 2016.

The card for this WWE Network event is stacked. Once again, AJ Styles and Roman Reigns are vying for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This rematch will will fall under Extreme Rules, which means pure anarchy will go down. Also on deck for this PPV is a Texas Tornado match between Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows and The Usos, a Submission match between Charlotte and Natalya, a No DQ match between Dolph Ziggler and Baron Corbin plus even more intense matchups.

Now that Extreme Rules 2016 is underway, we’re going to list all the results and highlights you need to know.



Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin (No Disqualification Match)

Winner: Baron Corbin!

Highlights: Ziggler broke out some new pink and white tights. Ziggler started the bout out by flinging Corbin into one of the steel corner ring posts. He almost got a quick win, but Corbin shoved him before the count of two. Ziggler splashed Corbin in the corner, but Corbin fought him off and took the fight outside the ring. Corbin pulled Ziggler’s face right into the steel ring post. Then he threw Ziggler chest first into the protective pads when they both got back into the ring. Corbin trapped Ziggler’s arms between the ring ropes and taunted him while he laid in several stiff punches. Corbin then proceeded to lock Ziggler into a facelock.

Ziggler stayed stuck in Corbin’s submission lock for just a few moments. Once he escaped, Ziggler turned the tables on Corbin and began beating him down with his comeback offense. Ziggler went for a Fame Asser, but Corbin caught him in mid-air. Ziggler rolled behind him and almost got the win, but Corbin shoved him off and then planted him with his Deep Six spinning slam. Corbin picked up Ziggler into a Powerbomb position. He flung Ziggler into the air, but Ziggler caught himself on the top rope and tried to jump into a Spinning DDT. Corbin caught him and paid for it by getting laid down with a Fame Asser. Ziggler kept going strong for a bit until Corbin took him down with a Low Blow. The match came to an end once Corbin finished Ziggler with his End of Days.


The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) vs. The Club (Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows) (Texas Tornado Tag Team Match)

Winners: The Club (Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows)!

Highlights: The Usos wasted no time in starting this brawl as they ran right into Anderson and Gallows on the entrance ramp. inside the ring, both twins took it to their latest rivals and pushed them outside the ring. On the outside, Anderson catapulted Jimmy into the audience. Then Anderson and Gallows started beating down on Jey. Jey took the chance to get inside the ring and launch himself onto both men. The match continued with even more fierce action. Anderson and Gallows went into a cool variation of their Boot of Doom to Jimmy on the outside. Back in the ring, both men began working on Jey with their tag team maneuvers. Both men went for a top rope move, but Jimmy pushed Anderson off the top rope. Jimmy dropkicked Gallows into a pin position with Jey, but they couldn’t get the win.

Anderson pulled Jimmy out once again, which led to Gallows stopping Jey from saving his brother. Anderson laid in a nice knee strike on Jey, which was followed up by a Gallows big boot. Anderson signaled for the Boot of Doom again, but he stopped. The Usos laid in their duo Superkick on Gallows and almost hit their big splashes from the top rope. After this moment, all four men laid each other out with their respective trademark moves. However, all four men were unable to revive themselves and get a pin. Anderson took the outside and ran full speed at Jey, but he got stopped with a Superkick. Anderson then got caught with the Umaga tribute maneuver right to the crowd barrier. Gallows threw Jey into the ringside area and then retrieved the ring bell. Gallows looked to lay out Jimmy, but he got stopped with a Superkick. Jimmy tried to get the win with his Superfly Splash, but Gallows moved at the very last second. Jey fell right onto the ring bell and then got cut off with a Magic Killer.


Kalisto (c) vs. Rusev (with Lana) (WWE United States Championship)

Winner: And the new WWE United States Champion, Rusev!

Highlights: Kalisto wasted no time in targeting Rusev’s legs with swift kicks. As soon as Kalisto took to the air, Rusev used a sledgehammer-like strike to swat him away. Rusev then began assaulting his much smaller rival. Rusev used his powerful sidekick to ground Kalisto later on. At one point, Kalisto kicked Rusev in the leg again and finally got him down to one knee. This didn’t do much to stop him though since Rusev got back up and struck Kalisto to the mat. Rusev then chose to lock in a tight Bearhug on Kalisto for a good while. Rusev then broke the hold and kneed Kalisto in the back, then picked him up for the Torture Rack.

Kalisto fought hard and switched into a Sleeper Hold on Rusev for several moments. Rusev started fading, but he chose to fall backwards and land right on Kalisto to get him off. As the match continued, Kalisto planted Rusev with a Tornado DDT off the top rope. Kalisto made his comeback with more kicks and plenty of high flying moves. When Rusev ended up on the outside, Kalisto flew through the middle ropes and locked in a Hurricanrana and spun Rusev right into the steel ring steps. Back in the ring, Kalisto landed a Springboard Frog Splash on Rusev but only got a 2-count. Rusev ran out the ring, but got caught with a Asai Moonsault as soon as he turned around to notice his opponent. Kalisto looked to capitalize with another big top rope move, but Rusev shoved him off right onto the edge of the ring. The ref and ringside doctor began checking on Kalisto, but Rusev would have none of it. Once he locked in The Accolade, Kalisto quickly tapped out.


The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and/or Xavier Woods) (c) vs. The Vaudevillains (Aiden English and Simon Gotch) (WWE Tag Team Championship)

Winners: And still the WWE Tag Team Champions, The New Day!

Highlights: The New Day gave a proud speech to the live audience in attendance as usual. Big E brought out two shovels that represented their opponents. Big E noted that since they’re in the Garden State, they’re about to bury some hoes. Wait…that’s not PG. Once the match began, Woods laid in a nice clothesline on English. Xavier looked fiercer than usual as he laid in a running Hurricanrana. He looked to get in some more offense, but English shoved him to the outside and signaled Gotch to punish him some more. Gotch laid in some offense of his own back in the ring before tagging English back in. English dropped a big knee on Xavier and then locked in a tight Sleeper Hold. Gotch returned to the ring and then locked Xavier into a submission hold of his own.

Xavier escaped the hold and threw some devastating elbows at Gotch and finally dropped him with an Enzuguri. Big E got the hot tag and began handing out suplexes to English and Gotch. His comeback offense came into play as he dominated English in the ring. Big E went for his middle rope splash to the outside, but he ran right into a knee strike from English. English almost got the win with a Front Face DDT, but Big E kicked out. Big E almost landed his duo Big Landing with Big E, but English escaped. The match fell to the outside and pure pandemonium ensued. Xavier almost got beat with the Whirling Dervish, but he kicked out at two. Big E ended up spearing English to the outside. Kofi kicked Gotch in the head while the ref’s back was turned, which then led to Xavier finishing him off with a Shining Wizard.

The Miz (c) (with Maryse) vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn (Fatal-4-Way Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE Intercontinental Champion, The Miz!

Highlights: As soon as the bell rang, Zayn took out Owens with his Helluva Kick. Cesaro then chose to lay in an European Uppercut to Miz. Zayn and Cesaro were the only men left in the ring, which led to them locking horns and showing off to the crowd. Zayn got in a nice flurry of offense on Cesaro at first. Afterwards, Cesaro recovered and dropped Zayn with a Spinning Backbreaker. Soon, Miz got back into the match and started brawling with both men. Zayn pushed both men outside and then landed on them both with a Tope Con Hilo. Back in the ring, Zayn looked to remain in control but Miz cut him off with his Corner Clothesline. Miz climbed the top rope, but Zayn stopped him and looked for a Superplex. Cesaro came in and almost dropped them both with a Tower of Doom. Owens finally woke up and stopped this all from going down.

Owens threw Cesaro and his injured shoulder into the steel ring post, then he focused his offense on Zayn. Owens made sure to beat down Zayn repeatedly and stop the other two men from getting inside the ring. Once Owens got to the top rope, Miz finally returned but he got cut off by Owens. Zayn went for the same move Miz looked for, but he pushed off too. Once Miz and Zayn looked to both Superplex Owens, Cesaro dropped all three men with a Tower of Doom. Zayn soon recovered and laid in a Blue Thunder Bomb on Cesaro. Miz kicked him away before he could get a 2-count, though. Miz caught Zayn in a Capture Suplex position, but Cesaro German Suplexed him while Zayn was still locked in his arms. Once Zayn, Owens and Miz were recovering in each ring corner, Cesaro went crazy with repeated European Uppercuts.

Cesaro signaled for his Big Swing, but Owens cut him off with a German Suplex and a Cannonball. Owens pulled off two more Cannonball corner splashes onto his other opponents. Owens went for his finished, but Zayn landed on his feet and landed a Half Nelson Suplex. But Zayn then got caught with another European Uppercut out of the air. Then Cesaro got dropped with a Skull Crushing Finale from Miz, but he managed to survive. Miz then made the mistake of taunting and slapping Cesaro, who responded by landing a jumping European Uppercut. Cesaro then sent Miz around the world with a Big Swing that went right into a Sharpshooter. Miz crawled to the rope and ended up getting his wife pulled into the ring. Miz tapped, but the ref was too concerned with Maryse.

Back in the ring, Cesaro looked to lock in his Sharpshooter once again. Owens stopped it by landing a nice Frog Splash on Miz while his legs were still being held by Cesaro. Cesaro took out Owens with a Neutralizer, but Zayn cut off his pin attempt right after. Zayn and Cesaro soon got into it. Zayn almost won by getting flipped into the air and catching Cesaro with a Sunset Flip. Zayn looked to land his Helluva Kick, but he ran straight into another European Uppercut. Cesaro then ran right into an Exploder Suplex and almost got beat with another Helluva Kick. Owens intercepted him with a Superkick and almost took out Cesaro with his Pop Up Powerbomb. Miz cut off his pin attempt and then flatted Owens with an outside Skull Crushing Finale. Miz almost pinned Cesaro, but he escaped. Miz looked for another big move, but Zayn got involved and landed another Helluva Kick on Cesaro. Owens ended up grabbing Zayn to the outside, which led to Miz sneaking away with the win by pinning Cesaro.


Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho (Asylum Match)

Winner: Dean Ambrose!

Highlights: The crowd got to witness the Asylum cage slowly make its way down to the ring as the lights flickered and some frightening music played over the speakers. This match can be won via pin or submission. Once both competitors got locked inside the cage, Ambrose got in some early offense. Jericho yelled at the ref to open the cage, but Ambrose cut him off while the ref tried to explain to Y2J that he couldn’t do so. Ambrose clotheslined Y2J and threw him into the cage a few times after Jericho attempted to grab a weapon off the cage. Both men ended up climbing the cage, which resulted in Ambrose retrieving a mop and sticking it right in Y2J’s ears. Ambrose then assaulted Jericho with his newly acquired weapon. After getting some space from Ambrose, Jericho landed a missile dropkick on Ambrose and then beat on him with his own mop.

Jericho then made his climb up the cage to get a barbed wire 2×4, but Ambrose brought him back down to the mat with a Back Suplex. Then both recovered quickly and got a weapon of their own: Ambrose picked up some nunchucks while Jericho got his barbed wire 2×4. Jericho missed hitting Ambrose with his weapon, which led to Ambrose landing in some nice strikes with his chosen weapon. Jericho and Ambrose ended up on top of the cage later on. Y2J grabbed a Kendo Stick and went to town on his opponent with continued strikes. Jericho came off the top rope with another Kendo Stick shot that cracked Ambrose over the head. Jericho then used Ambrose’s nunchucks to assault him and made sure to add insult to injury with a quick suplex.

Y2J climbed the cage once again and this time he got ahold of a leather strap. He began whipping the hell out of a grounded Ambrose while he jaw jacked with the crowd. When Y2J climbed the top rope, Ambrose got to his feet and pulled Jericho to the mat by using his leather strap. Ambrose got to do some lethal whips of his own on Jericho with his leather strap. Jericho ended up shoving Ambrose right into the cage after getting viciously whipped. Y2J tried to escape the cage once again, but Ambrose caught up with him and dropped him groin first onto the ring ropes. Ambrose then climbed the cage and got himself a fire extinguisher. Jericho then chose to get ahold of a straightjacket. Jericho threw the straightjacket right onto Ambrose and shocked him with a quick Enzuguri. Jericho remained in control by slamming him into the cage and then dropkicking him into it for good measure. Y2J punched Ambrose, berated him and then tried locking the straightjacket around Ambrose. Ambrose got to his feet, escaped the straightjacket and began landing his comeback moveset on Jericho.

Ambrose remained in control for a bit before Y2J finally took him down with a Double Arm Backbreaker. Jericho’s turn at bat didn’t last long though as he soon got caught with a Bulldog from Ambrose. Ambrose then did the unthinkable: he climbed all the way to the top of the cage and then flew back down with a elbow drop on Jericho! However, he was still unable to pin Jericho. Ambrose got himself a plastic bucket that contained a bag full of thumbtacks. Ambrose then made the crowd come alive by dumping them all over the mat, which sacred the hell out of Y2J. Y2J tried leaving the ring, but Ambrose pulled him back down. Both men made several attempt to drop one another on the tacks, but to no avail. Jericho event went for a Lionsault, but Ambrose got his knees up in time to counter him. Ambrose almost hit his Dirty Deeds on Y2J on top of the tacks, but Jericho countered him and locked in his Walls of Jericho.

Ambrose remained locked in for several moments while the ref looked on. Ambrose then grabbed a Kendo Stick and swung wildly at Y2J, who was then forced to break the hold. Ambrose climbed to the top rope to land another big strike, but Y2J blinded him with the fire extinguisher and hit him with a Codebreaker. Ambrose till kicked out at two, though! Jericho cracked Ambrose with the barbed wire 2×4 over and over right after. Jericho went for another Codebreaker, but Ambrose caught him and flung his back first right onto the thumbtacks. Ambrose finally got the win after landing his Dirty Deeds on Jericho.

Charlotte (c) vs. Natalya (Submission Match for the WWE Women’s Championship; Ric Flair is banned from ringside)

Winner: And still the WWE Women’s Champion, Charlotte!

Highlights: As soon as the bell rung, Natalya got the upper hand with headlock takeovers. Natalya locked in a leg submission on Charlotte pretty quickly, but Charlotte responded with a head/leg submission of her own right after. Natalya broke out of it, suplexed Charlotte’s face into the mat and then locked her into a Surfboard submission. Charlotte fought her out of it and hopped onto the ring apron, but she jumped into the ring and got dropped with a Discus Clothesline. Charlotte retreated to the outside and Natalya made sure to follow her. Charlotte laid in a bunch of chops and got back into the ring soon after. She finally got the upper hand after laying a big boot on Natalya.

Charlotte looked to lock in her finishing submission, but Natalya countered her and locked her into an armbar. After being locked in her hold for several moments, Charlotte finally got back to her feet and brought Natalya back down to the mat with a Sitdown Powerbomb. Charlotte then got right back to work on Natalya’s legs. Charlotte suplexed Natalya’s legs right into the ring ropes. She then went for a nice Moonsault that further hurt Natalya, which was followed up a by Single Leg Crab. Natalya eventually escaped and landed a German Suplex on Charlotte. Natalya then finally locked in her Sharpshooter on Charlotte. Charlotte got to the rope, but Natalya kept her hold locked in for even longer. Ric Flair’s music hit and someone with his robe came out. It turned out to be Dana Brooke! Brooke got into a scuffle with Natalya, which led to Charlotte catching Natalya off guard with her Figure Eight submission. Natalya finally decided to tap out. Ric, Dana and Charlotte celebrated afterwards.

Roman Reigns (c) vs. AJ Styles (Extreme Rules Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

Winner: And still the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Roman Reigns!

Highlights: AJ and Roman got heated as soon as the bell rang with lockups, strikes and shoves. AJ got Reigns into the corner and got in some nice elbows and kicks, but Reigns shoved him away into the next corner and hit him with several clotheslines. AJ responded with some stiff elbow strikes, but Reigns answered him right back with a jumping knee strike. AJ went outside and grabbed a steel chair, but Reigns knocked him down and stole it from him. Reigns went to strike hi, with it, but AJ dodged it at the last minute. AJ grabbed ahold of Reigns’ feet and pulled him to the outside. Roman looked to hit him with the chair again, but AJ dodged him again. AJ then laid in more elbow strikes and soon clotheslined him right into the crowd. The fight soon went all over the arena.

AJ decided to use a chair and slam it right in Reigns’ gut. Both men fought all the way near the Kickoff table. Reigns used his power to launch AJ back first onto that same glass table. Reigns looked to grab AJ, but AJ kicked him right in the head before he could get him. Then AJ went flying with a Phenomenal Forearm right off the table onto Reigns. AJ then got control of the match again as he struck Reigns over and over. Both men fought all the way back to the timekeeper’s area. AJ threw Reigns head first into the steel ring post and guard barrier. Then AJ ripped off the protective floor padding and looked to land something big: a Styles Clash! Reigns escaped though and landed a swift uppercut on AJ. Reigns then continually slammed AJ’s head into the steel ring steps. Reigns cleared off one of the announce tables and looked to Powerbomb AJ onto it. AJ escaped and punched his way out of Reigns’ grasp. AJ almost landed a Styles Clash on the table, but Reigns escaped once again. AJ ran right at Reigns again, but Reigns back dropped him right onto the announce table behind him.

Reigns wasted no time in getting AJ back into the ring and pinning him, but AJ kicked out. Reigns then landed a nice Splash Mountain Powerbomb on AJ, but AJ still managed to hang on. Reigns went for a Spear, but AJ cut him off by shoving him right in the knees. Reigns went to shove AJ in the ring corner, which worked on the first attempt. On the second attempt though, AJ hit him with a knee and then suplexed him right into the ring corner. Outside the ring, AJ struck Reigns with another knee and then hopped right onto his head. Reigns caught him, slammed his head into the HD ring monitor, did it again to the crowd barrier and then Powerbombed him onto another announce table. When Reigns went for a big Spear, AJ dodged him and caused him to ram himself right through the timekeeper’s area barrier.

AJ shoved Reigns into the ring and then went for his Phenomenal Forearm. But Reigns caught him with a Superman Punch as soon as AJ hopped up onto the top rope. Reigns then left the ring to land a Spear on AJ. Once AJ got put back into the ring, Anderson and Gallows ran out and hit their Boot of Doom on Reigns. However, they were unable to keep Reigns down for AJ to finish him. The Usos then ran out and landed a bunch of Superkicks on Anderson and Gallows. AJ ate a Superfly Splash and almost got beat, but he kicked out of a Reigns pin attempt. Anderson and Gallows then began brawling with The Usos on the outside. Reigns landed two Superman Punches on AJ’s boys and then signaled for the Spear. AJ cut him with off with a kick and dropped Reigns with a swift Styles Clash. Reigns still kicked out! AJ looked to land another one, but Reigns shoved him away. Reigns looked to land another Spear, but AJ cut him off with an Enzuguri. AJ then landed a second Styles Clash and this time it was on a chair. AJ still couldn’t get the winning pin due to one of The Usos grabbing his leg. AJ picked up a steel chair and swung for the fences as he cut down Reigns and his family members. AJ went airborne for another Phenomenal Forearm, but Reigns speared him in midair and got the win. While Reigns was celebrating, Seth Rollins made his shocking return! He immediately landed a Pedigree on Reigns and took hold of the title he never truly lost. The crowd went crazy as Rollins lifted the championship into the air.

Best Non-Match Moments/Highlights


• The Dudley Boyz randomly showed up and spoke about how an “extreme” even such as this one wouldn’t be right without them. At first, Buh Buh pandered to the crowd about ECW. But then he took a crap all over that old fed’s legacy and said they were responsible for ending ECW. He also made it clear that today’s new crop of wrestlers would fall just like ECW did. Dudley took his turn to berate the crowd and even joined in with Buh Buh when it came to time to disrespect the city they were in. All of a sudden, Big Cass came out. He joked about Buh Buh being the man to devour everything there is to eat on a table. Cass stood up for his fellow new era Superstars. When Cass entered the ring, he got beat down by both men at first. Then he finally gained the advantage and put The Dudley Boyz flat on their back. Cass made sure to call them “SAWFT!” before he took his exit.
