A crowd of over 80,000 saw 120 scoreless minutes at MetLife Stadium, and Argentina and Chile finished the tournament with their second conseuctive penalty shootout at a Copa America final.
The shootout turned on a diving save by Claudio Bravo, who pushed away Lucas Biglia’s shot to give Chile the lead. That was after Lionel Messi sailed his kick over the bar, his first career miss in a penalty shootout.
The teams played a match similar to their 2015 final, a physical affair left scoreless after 120 minutes. Sunday night was no different, with both teams receiving red cards in the first half.
Chile went down to 10 men in the 28th minute, when Marcelo Diaz was shown a second yellow card for a tough challenge on Messi. The teams went level shortly after, when Marcus Rojo was sent off in questionable fashion after a tackle on Arturo Vidal.
Argentina and Chile are no strangers, even when it comes to Copa America. They met in last year’s final, with Chile taking the crowd in front of home fans via penalty shootout. They were also matched in the group stage, when Argentina defeated La Roja 2-1 with Messi on the bench.
