Italy 1-1 2
Box Score
We said in our betting preview that Italy would need two goals to win, but they looked far better than expected during Monday’s win over Belgium.
Italy played sound defensive soccer and stayed aggressive on the ball throughout. Belgium tried to push men forward, but it only made Italy’s counter more effective. That was most true in the final minutes, when Candreva, who was the best player on the field in Lyon, lofted a pass to a wide-open Pelle for Italy’s second goal.
The points are vital, but there are still matches yet to play in Group E. Italy will face Sweden on Friday, while Belgium will meet Ireland on Saturday.
Azzurri Seal the Win With Late Finish
Italy’s counter prevented Belgium from pushing, and when Belgium pushed too much, Italy made them pay. The defense of Italy was tremendous as usual today, but their offense, specifically Candreva, has been outstanding throughout.
This Miss From Lukaku Keeps Italy Ahead
Italy has declined to slow the pace in this game, and just when it looked like they were taking control, Belgium broke free on the counter. Romelu Lukaku, quiet until this point, was all alone with only Gianluigi Buffon to beat but his effort barely floated over the net.
At the other end, Courtois makes a diving save to keep the score 1-0. Both teams have come out strong in the second half.
Italy & Giaccherini Strike First
A fantastic run and a better ball from Bonucci have Italy on the board first. Belgium dictated the pace early, but Italy have settled their nerves and become the more active team.
