Jordan Spieth Round 1 Score, 2016 U.S. Open
Before play was suspended for the day on Thursday, Spieth shot one-over through 11 holes, which had him hovering near the leaderboard. When play resumed Friday, the defending U.S. Open champ hit two bogeys and a birdie over his final seven holes, finishing his first round at plus-two, putting him six strokes behind leader Andrew Landry.
Round 1 Highlights
Starting on the back nine, Spieth began his tournament with par on No. 10. He tee shot on No. 11 went into the bunker, but he was able to get onto the green and hit an excellent two-putt to save par.
On the Par 5 12th, which spans a monstrous 684 yards, he hit a beautiful approach shot and knocked it in for birdie to get to one-under:
Following a par on No. 13, Spieth’s pitch shot from the rough on 14 was interrupted by a 79-minute weather delay, and he ended up bogeying the hole.
On 17, Spieth hit a great approach shot but got unlucky as the backspin on the ball carried it into a bunker. He had to stew about that for about two hours during another weather delay but responded with a phenomenal up-and-down to stay even:
He followed up with two more pars and a bogey on No. 2 before a third weather delay ultimately ended play for Thursday.
Preview & Odds
Much was made about Spieth’s meltdown at the Masters in April, but this is still a 22-year-old who has finished first, first, fourth, second and second in his last five major tournaments.
While Spieth’s form has been a little unpredictable by his lofty standards (missed cut, 18th, 1st and 57th since the Masters), he’s the best scrambler and putter in the world when he’s at the top of his game–which has proven to be the case at every major in the last 14 months–and those are two traits that will prove very vital at Oakmont.
Considering what he brings to the table in the biggest moments, the defending champion enters with somewhat valuable odds at 9-to-1, which are third shortest in the field behind Jason Day (13-to-2) and Rory McIlroy (15-to-2).
Other odds involving Spieth include:
Spieth First Round Leader: 16-to-1
Top-5 Finish: +225
McIlroy vs. Spieth: McIlroy (-135), Spieth (+105)
Day vs. Spieth: Day (-130), Spieth (EVEN)
Dustin Johnson vs. Spieth: Johnson (EVEN), Spieth (-130)
