It hasn’t been advertised, but there are two home teams at Copa America.
University of Phoenix Stadium will turn the colors of El Tri on Sunday, as Mexico begin their Copa America quest against Uruguay. Mexico have struggled in recent trips to the South America tournament, but this squad has been outstanding under relatively new manager Juan Carlos Osorio.
Mexico begin Copa America on a 19-match unbeaten run, dating back to this same event last year. They primarily do it with defense, as the squad have gone eight straight matches leading into Sunday without conceding a goal. Expect to hear Andres Guardado’s name frequently on the broadcast, as the PSV midfielder looks to control the game from the middle.
For Uruguay, it’s all about scoring goals without Luis Suarez. After scoring 40 goals in Spain this season, the Barcelona striker will miss at least the group stage of Copa America with a hamstring injury. Suarez was also absent from last year’s tournament while serving his suspension related to the 2014 World Cup. Uruguay managed just two goals in those four games, and were eliminated by host Chile in the quarterfinals.
