With an extra four teams qualifying for Euro’s knockout stage, Slovakia can rebound quickly from their last-gasp loss to Wales with a good performance against Russia. The Russians salvaged a point against England with a 92nd-minute tying goal, but have been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week due to unruly fans across France.
On Tuesday Russia was given suspended disqualification by UEFA, and the team was assured that anymore fan violence will result in the team being thrown out of the tournament. That applies only to violence inside the stadium.
In the streets of France, violence continues between Russian fans and others within Group B. Russia’s fans are near the team in Lille, while England and Wales supporters are not far away in nearby Lens. Nearby towns have a temporary ban on selling alcohol, but that didn’t stop minor incidents involving fans on Tuesday evening.
Russian forward Artem Dzyuba said it best: “We’re not at a street-fighting championship. Please, let’s focus on football.”
