Copa America Centenario will finally kickoff Friday night, when USMNT play their first group stage match against Colombia. It’s an important one for the teams in Group A, labeled by many as the most balanced and challenging group of the opening round.
For USA and Jurgen Klinsmann, history is against them. The team is 1-1-4 in their past six games against Colombia, with a 2007 loss part of their most recent Copa America appearance. The Americans have outscored opponents 12-1 in the buildup to the opener, but will face talent in Colombia exceeding that of recently defeated Puerto Rico and Bolivia.
James Rodriguez was on the bench for Real Madrid’s late-season title push, but that should only make him fresher for Copa America. The move to Madrid hasn’t been a resounding success for James, but the breakout star 2014 World Cup hasn’t lost any ability. He’ll be a problem for the USA back line, no matter who Klinsmann decides on starting.
