The NHL may become the first major professional league to have a Vegas team.

The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the NHL has chosen Las Vegas for expansion. This is dependent on organizers providing a $500 expansion million fee, according to the AP report.

The AP report states:

A person with direct knowledge of the NHL’s decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee.
The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22.

Per an AP source, the Las Vegas expansion is a “done deal.”

The NHL has already said that the earliest they would expand is the 2017-18 season. Quebec City has also been under consideration for the league’s expansion.

Billionaire Bill Foley is leading the efforts to bring an NHL team to Las Vegas, and has remained steadfast in his commitment. Foley has already secured 13,200 season-ticket deposits, to go with 1,000 commitments from corporations and 735 suite seats.
