Kevin Durant celebrated his July 4th by shaking up the NBA world. Durant announced he will sign with the Golden State Warriors on July 6th. He will sign a two-year contract with a player option for next offseason.
The Warriors addition of Durant greatly helped their odds of winning the 2017 NBA championship. According to OddsShark, the Warriors were the favorite before Durant, but the odds jumped up to -115. Cleveland is in second at +350.
Meanwhile, the Thunder’s odds plummeted in light of the news. Oklahoma City dropped from +800 to +2000 in the odds. Even though they dropped a bit, the Thunder still find themselves in the top five with Russell Westbrook at the helm.
Golden State’s pitch to Durant was simple; they stressed the ability for Durant to win with the Warriors. According to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Warriors GM Bob Myers told Durant, “Without you, we can another title or two. Without us, you might win too. Together? We’ll win a bunch.”
It looks like the oddsmakers agree with Myers.
