WWE Battleground 2016: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know

The 2016 edition of this PPV/special event takes place right after the recent RAW/SmackDown draft. Two rosters have been created for both shows, but all the matches that have been planned for this show are still intact. AJ Styles and The Club might be on different shows, but they're still going to war with John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass. Dean Ambrose still holds onto the WWE Championship as a member of SmackDown, but he may lose it to the RAW brand if Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns beats him. These matches and more make up the entirety of the card for the show. Now that WWE Battleground 2016 has officially begun, we'll be here to give you all the results and highlights. The Usos (Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso) vs. Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango) (Kickoff Match) Winners: Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango)! Highlights: Fandango and Jimmy started off with quick move exchanges. After Jimmy got the best of him, Fandango got a bit of double team offense done to him by Jey. Jey stayed on top of the rival team for a bit before he got hot-shotted on the top rope by Breeze. Breezango laid Jey out with a double team maneuver of their own right after. Breezango kept the offense going got a little while, but Jey took them both out with two Enzuguri's. Jimmy then got the hot tag and began working over Breezango. Several superkicks and other strikes were exchanged mid-match, which almost led to Fandango getting the winning pin. Fandango looked to hit a Superplex on Jimmy but after some team confusion, Jimmy ended up splashing Breezango from the top rope. Fandango finally took Jimmy off the top rope with a nice kick, but then all four men began taking each other out with middle-rope splashes and Superkicks. Breeze grabbed the winning pin after rolling Jimmy up into a Small Package after a failed Superfly Splash. Sasha Banks & Bayley vs. Charlotte & Dana Brooke Winners: Sasha Banks & Bayley! Highlights: While Banks and her surprise partner were celebrating, Charlotte and Brooke got the jump on them before the match officially begun. When the ref got the bell to ring, Charlotte wasted no time in beating the holy hell out of Bayley. Bayley managed to fight back with a kick in the corner and a top rope flying back elbow. Banks got tagged in and tok down Charlotte with a Hurricanrana off the top rope, plus she knocked Brooke off the ring apron. Charlotte quickly recovered though and slammed Banks' face into the ring corner. Brooke eventually got back into the match and locked Banks into a submissions hold. Banks managed to escape and tag in a super hot Bayley, who laid out Brooke with her signature offense. However, Brooke put a stop to it all after she pulled her off the top rope and laid her back atop the corner ring apron. Brooke then continued beating down the surprise tag team partner of Banks. After Brooke's dominating offense, both women took each other down with double clotheslines. Banks and Charlotte both got the hot tag, which led to Banks using her comeback offense on Charlotte and Brooke. Charlotte almost won the match with a Big Boot/Natural Selection combo, but Bayley saved her at the last minute. Banks locked in the Banks Statement for just a few seconds before Brooke pulled Charlotte from inside the ring. When Charlotte came back, she fell right into Banks' clutches and tapped out to the Banks Statement. The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) vs. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman) (Six-Man Tag Team Match) Winners: The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman)! Highlights: The New Day spoke about their legendary reign as the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions of all time. They also celebrated the fact that they got drafted to RAW as a unit. They did acknowledge that The Wyatt Family would be even more dangerous since this is the stable's last night together as full unit. Kofi and Bray actually started things off, which resulted in a quick dropkick from Kofi. But Braun then entered the match and landed a huge boot and corner splash on Kofi. Rowan then got tagged in and laid out Kofi with a bodyslam and a shot to the kidney. Rowan took his time mauling Kofi and locked him into a painful hold to keep him grounded. Kofi escaped the hold, but ran right into a clothesline. The Wyatt Family continued assaulting Kofi as Bray got back into the bout. Kofi finally created some separation for himself from Bray, but Bray knocked Kofi's block off with a nice Lariat. Bray then stared down Woods with a menacing look on his face. The Wyatt's then got right back to beating down Kofi. Kofi finally fought off Bray after kicking him in the corner and forcing him to throw himself through the middle ropes. Big E soon got the hot tag and went to work on Rowan. Big E's pin got interrupted by Strowman, which led to him also slapping down Woods via his chest. Bray uppercutted Big E and caused him to get dropped by a Side Slam from Rowan. Kofi then got involved after landing an over-the top-rope tope to Rowan. The action moved at an intense pace until Woods saved Kofi from Bray's finishing move. Kofi got slammed down hard by Bray, which then caused Woods to face his fears and begin beating down Bray. Woods struck down Strowman and Rowan, which then caused Big E to spear Rowan through the middle rope. But it was all for naught as Woods turned right around into a Sister Abigail from Bray for the win. Rusev (c) (with Lana) vs. Zack Ryder (WWE United States Championship) Winner: And still the WWE United States Champion, Rusev! Highlights: Ryder showed up in some very retro looking pro-USA gear for his big title match. When the match began, Rusev used his brute strength to power down his smaller opponent. Ryder used a few elbow shots to back up the big man, ran outside the ring and then landed a Baseball Dropkick to further weaken Rusev. After missing a Missile Dropkick, Ryder got taken out with a powerful side kick. Rusev then used his ground and pound offense to further damage Ryder. Rusev then used his surprising agility to land a running Spinning Kick to Ryder. Rusev then held on tight to Ryder's waist during a submission hold attempt. Ryder soon managed to escape his hold and ground Rusev. Ryder went for his Broski Boot, but Rusev caught his foot and stopped him. But Ryder landed a counter of his own when he landed a Neckbreaker after a Rusev suplex attempt. Ryder then finally hit Rusev with his Broski boot. The match went to the outside where Rusev dropped Ryder's waist first onto the crowd barrier. Rusev then tried to flatten Ryder against the same barrier, but Ryder dodged it and went airborne with a missile dropkick on the outside. Ryder managed to hit his Ruff Ryder, but he missed his Elbow Drop right after when Rusev got his knees up to counter him. Rusev kept Ryder locked into The Accolade for several moments before he finally made Ryder tap out. After the match, Rusev continued beating down Ryder until his Hype Bros' buddy Mojo Rawley confronted Rusev. Highlights: Zayn ran right at Owens with a Helluva Kick, but Owens quickly rolled to the outside. The action stayed there for a bit as Owens threw Zayn into security barrier. Zayn responded by doing the same to Owens multiple times. Back in the ring, Zayn caught Owens off guard with a Jumping Calf Kick. Zayn looked to land his Spinning Tornado DDT, but Owens tripped him up and then flattened him with his Cannonball Splash into the corner. Owens made sure to stay on the offensive as he continued beating down Zayn. Owens even dropped Zayn ribs first onto the ropes with a suplex, which was then followed up with a Running Senton. Owens then locked Zayn into a tight Sleeper Hold for a lengthy amount of time. When Zayn finally escaped, he took down Owens with a nice Michinoku Driver. Owens rolled to the outside and almost powerbombed Zayn onto the ring apron. Zayn then landed his Arabian Moonsault press onto Owens, but he landed awkwardly and hurt his shoulder. Owens began targeting his now injured limb, but Zayn fought him off when they got back into the ring with a Blue Thunder Bomb. Both men soon ended up vying for control on the top rope. Zayn pushed Owens off and looked to land a big splash, but Owens dodged underneath him and landed a Superkick to an unsuspecting Zayn. Zayn then got locked into a Crossface submission hold from Owens for a good while. Zayn fought off the hold by putting his foot on the bottom rope. Back on his feet, Owens laid into Zayn with corner clotheslines. On his third attempt, Owens got stuck with an Exploder into the ring corner. Owens rolled out before he could catch Zayn's finisher, though. In an insane moment, Zayn landed his Brainbuster right on the ring apron on Owens. Both Superstars managed to head back into the ring and stop the ref's count. When they both got to their feet, a fist fight ensued. The action went back to the outside, which led to Zayn looking to hit his Tornado DDT. This failed though as Owens cut him off with a Superkick and another Cannonball Splash. Owens then took to the air to hit a beautiful Frog Splash. Owens looked to hit his finisher, but Zayn countered him with his Tornado DDT. Zayn ran into another Super Kick, but he made another comeback with two Half-Nelson Suplexes. Zayn ran full speed ahead to land his big finisher, but Owens dropped him with a Pop Up Powerbomb. Zayn escaped the pin by putting his foot near the bottom rope. Owens taunted Zayn with slaps, but it did nothing but piss off Zayn. Zayn responded with an Exploder, another Half-Nelson Suplex and two devastating Helluva Kicks. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya Winner: Natalya! Highlights: Becky went full steam ahead at Natalya with some quick suplexes. Natalya took a quick breather outside the ring and ran back in to land some quick snap offense of her own. Becky got the better of her again though and then began taking her to town outside the ring. Natalya kept running away from her once best friend over and over. Natalya tripped up Becky and caused he to fall on her knee on the outside ring apron. Natalya then aimed her offense right at Becky's not weakened knee. Natalya locked Becky into a leg submission, but she almost got locked into Becky's main submission soon after. Natalya escaped it with ease and went right back to injuring Becky's leg. Becky withstood a ton of leg work from Natalya and finally regained her composure. She soon got the better of Natalya with all her comeback offense. Both women soon began fighting for control of their submissions, which Natalya won by finally locking in the Sharpshooter. Becky escaped and followed that up with a stiff kick to the chest and a top rope Missile Dropkick. Natalya cheated by kicking Becky in her leg while the ref stood over her. Natalya took advantage of Becky's weakened knee once agin after locking in one more Sharpshooter for the win. The Miz (c) (with Maryse) vs. Darren Young (with Bob Backlund) (WWE Intercontinental Championship) Winner: No one... Highlights: Darren got rough early with his champion rival. Young flipped The Miz over several times and got the better of their lockups. Miz eventually put Darren on his back with a few strikes, which angered Young and caused him to respond with even more takedowns. Young laid The Miz down with a nice Spinning Elbow strike as the match wore on. Maryse reared her ugly (pretty?) head during the match by distracting Darren. This led to Darren getting shoved off the top rope to the outside. The Miz then wasted no time in further injuring Darren in front of his mentor, Bob Backlund. Both men ended up locking each other into a Backslide pinning position, which Darren soon got the better of. After some back and forth struggling, The Miz laid out Darren with a big boot. Darren made sure to respond to The Miz's offense with a nice Clothesline. Then Darren turned the tide with his comeback offense, which was capped off with a Back Suplex to Miz on the ring apron. Darren looked for the Crossface Chickenwing, but The Miz fought him off and tried to leave the match. The Miz got confronted by Backlund, which made The Miz get grabbed by Darren and forced back into the ring. Madness ensued as Bob went nuts after getting slapped by Maryse and The Miz, which led to Darren causing the match to be thrown out after he locked a submission onto The Miz. Find out how to watch a free live stream of WWE Battleground 2016 here: John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs. The Club (AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows) (Six-Man Tag Team Match) Winners: John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass! Highlights: Enzo went on a tear with his pre-match promo (Cena showed him props and the crowd responded with tons of love). Big Cass also got in some good disses on The Club. When the match finally got underway, Enzo and AJ engaged in a lockup exchange. AJ got the better of Enzo at first and dropped him with his wonderful Dropkick to excite the crowd. He still got some hilarious Soccer Mom chants, though. Once Big Cass got involved, he used his height and power to put down Anderson. Big Cass and Enzo used their tag team moves to take out AJ's boys. Enzo got launched onto both men on the outside, which was then followed up by Cass doing the same to AJ. Cass landed a big bodyslam to Anderson and then picked up Enzo by dropping him right onto Anderson. Anderson lay weakened for a bit before he countered Enzo's offense and tagged in Gallows. Gallows landed a nice Jackhammer Suplex onto Enzo to cause him further discomfort. AJ then got tagged in and did his best to lay into Enzo. Soon, The Club began doing their worst to Enzo. Enzo soon did his best to get to his team after The Club ended up grounded on the outside. But Anderson cut off his hot tag with a flying knee strike. Gallows tried to body splash Enzo, but Enzo moved from underneath him and got the hot tag to Cena. Cena did his signature offense on AJ while the crowd cheered him on. Cena tried to his his AA, but AJ flipped out of it and hit his Pele. AJ looked for his Styles Clash, but Enzo cut him off with Tornado DDT. Soon after, everyone started landing their biggest moves on each other. Enzo mistakenly hit Cena, but then AJ accidentally cracked Gallows with his Phenomenal Elbow. Cena then got caught with an AA, but he got pulled out of the ring by Anderson and received a Spinebuster onto the announce table. Tons more big moves took place right on the outside. AJ hit his Styles Clash on Cena, but Big Cass pulled AJ to the outside. AJ ate a Big Boot from Cass, but Cass ended up on the receiving end of The Club's Magic Killer. Enzo then confronted both men and shoed his tenacity by not backing down. Anderson took himself out of the fight by running right into the steel ring post, but Gallows took out Enzo with a swift kick. Cena took Gallows out and then looked to land his AA on Styles from the top rope. AJ tried to fight him off, but Cena finally landed his big move for the win. Find out how to watch a free live stream of WWE Battleground 2016 here: Dean Ambrose (c) vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins (Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship) Winner: And still the WWE Champion, Dean Ambrose! Highlights: Both rosters sat in the back to make sure they didn't miss the match's proceedings. Then both show's Commissioners and General Managers arrived to watch the match in person. When the bell was finally rung, all three men stared each other down while the crowd rained down "ROMAN SUCKS!" chants. Rollins looked to once again unite with his brothers for old times sake, but Reigns shoved him down with a shoulder tackle. Reigns focuses his attention on Rollins for a bit, but Ambrose almost rolled up Reigns with a quick pin. Reigns and Ambrose locked up and soon exchanged strikes with each other. Rollins got back into the ring, got pushed out and cause Ambrose to almost get distracted and rolled up by Reigns. Both men got into a punching contest that ended when Ambrose jumped at Reigns with a running body splash. Reigns simply shoved him away while in midair. Rollins got back into the ring, but Reigns made sure to put him back down. Reigns and Ambrose got into a big brawl in one of teh ring corners for a good while. Rollins finally got in some good offense when he hit a Slingblade on Reigns. He then began beating down Ambrose with his signature strikes. The action spilled to the outside after Reigns hit his Drive By dropkick on Rollins after Rollins face planted Ambrose in the corner. Ambrose vaulted onto both men when he recovered soon after. Rollins got back into the match by flinging his opponents all over the ringside area. When Reigns and Rollins got caught fighting near the ring announcer's section, Ambrose ran across the announce tables and splashed them both. Back in the ring, Ambrose used his top rope offense to further ground Reigns. Ambrose looked to pin Reigns, but he got shoved off right into the direction of a Rollins Frog Splash. Rollins looked to capitalize on Reigns with a Pedigree, but Reigns used his comeback offense to beat down Rollins. Reigns landed tow big Superman Punches, but his Spear attempt failed. Ambrose and Rollins kicked him right in the face, but Rollins used a Pele to catch Ambrose off guard. Reigns landed another Superman Punch on Rollins, which caused him to turn around into an Ambrose Rebound Lariat. When all three men got back to their feet, they all punched each other over and over. Ambrose and Rollins decided to team up on Reigns and even looked to land the old Shield Powerbomb. Reigns escaped it, but he ended up on the outside. Ambrose flew at him through the middle rope and Rollins flew over the top to put Reigns down. Ambrose and Rollins then pulled off their double team Powerbomb to plant Reigns right through the announce table. Rollins ended their partnership early when he cracked Ambrose's back with a steel chair. Rollins then followed that up with a chair shot to Reigns' back. Rollins then tried to finish Ambrose with a Pedigree, but Ambrose escaped it. He ended up getting lifted into a Powerbomb position, but Ambrose flipped Rollins over right into the corner. Soon, Rollins and Ambrose fought to the top rope. Rollins shocked the crowd after he landed his Superplex/Falcon Arron combination. Ambrose survived the following pin attempt, though. When both men ended up on the top rope again, Reigns ran into the ring and delivered Powerbomb's to the both of them. Reigns looked to land another Superman Punch, but Ambrose countered him and almost his his Dirty Deeds. They both countered each other at several points of this moment, but Ambrose paid the price after getting Superman Punched to the outside. Reigns turned right around and got dropped with a Rollins' Pedigree. Reigns kicked out of the pin attempt soon after, though. Rollins signaled for another Pedigree, but it failed when Reigns powered out of it and laid him out with a Superman Punch and a Spear. Reigns was unable to grab the win, though. Ambrose ran in, landed his Dirty Deeds on Reigns and retained his championship. The entire SmackDown brand came out to celebrate with their WWE Champion.
