Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet made the final push to win the gold in the men’s road race on Saturday. On Sunday, the women will ride 141km on a challenging track filled with grueling climbs, and rough cobblestones.
Great Britian’s Lizzie Armitstead is one of the favorites going into the road race. She had a silver medal finish in the 2012 Olympic games.
Armistead’s missed drug tests became a source of controversy. The 27-year-old faced a possible two-year suspension for missing three drugs tests in a 12-month period, however one of them was declared void–allowing her to compete in the Rio games.
In an interview before Sunday’s road race, she told BBC that she would “never cheat in life.”
“In this situation I’m never going to win. If I win, people will say it’s because of something else,” she added.
Team USA’s Megan Guarnier and Evelyn Stevens are both considered contenders for the gold.
