The Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets kick off the 2016 season with a matchup at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Cincinnati looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender after starting last season 10-2 but went just 2-2 after losing quarterback Andy Dalton to a broken thumb and lost in the wild-card round for the fifth year in a row. Dalton is back healthy, but it remains to be seen how the offense will look without Marvin Jones (free agency), Mohamed Sanu (free agency) and Tyler Eifert (injury).
The Jets, meanwhile, narrowly missed the postseason after finishing 10-6 in Todd Bowles’ first season, and they’ll look to improve after retaining most of a dominant defense and adding veterans Matt Forte and Ryan Clady to the offense.
Both AFC squads have playoff aspirations in 2016, and this matchup could prove to be very important come December.
