After head-to-head battles in 17 consecutive years between 1997 and 2013, Michigan State and Notre Dame haven’t played each other the last two seasons, but they’ll renew their rivalry Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium.
The No. 18 Irish enter at 1-1, having lost a double-overtime thriller at Texas and easily disposing of Nevada. Thanks to the emergence of scintillating junior quarterback DeShone Kizer (371 passing yards, 112 rushing yards, nine total touchdowns, one interception), Brian Kelly’s squad has been lights out offensively, putting up 86 points through two games.
Michigan State, meanwhile, is ranked higher at No. 12, but the Spartans were from convincing in their only game of the season thus far, a 28-13 win over Furman.
“I try to do things 100 percent right all the time, and I don’t think I did that today,” said fifth-year senior quarterback Tyler O’Connor after the victory. “A win’s a win, we’re OK with it, but we have a lot of things we have to fix up. We stopped ourselves more than they stopped us, we think.”
The Irish, who have won the last three head-to-head meetings, are favored by a touchdown at home.
