United and City are both missing key players in the lineup when they meet for midweek League Cup action.
First, the injuries. City’s Kevin De Bruyne is beat up and won’t play Wednesday, and his status is in doubt for the weekend fixture with West Brom. For United, Eric Bailly has a knee injury and will be sidelined for at least two months. That leaves a huge hole in the United defense, which was carved for four goals on Sunday against Chelsea.
Next, it’s the rotation. Willy Caballero will start in goal for City, as he has done with most of the club’s cup matches. Vincent Kompany may also rest, and it’s possible Kelechi Iheanacho winds up in the starting lineup.
For United, it’s all about Wayne Rooney and where he fits into the United lineup. Mourinho denied on Sunday that he would sell Rooney, but other sources have indicated he might be leaning the other way.
