WATCH: Robert Lewandowski Downed By Firecracker During Poland-Romania Match

Poland forward Robert Lewandowski was treated on the field Friday afternoon after a firecracker thrown onto the field exploded near him. The Bayern Munich star was waiting for a Romania corner kick when the explosive landed near him, and Lewandowski immediately collapsed, covering his face.

Poland was leading Romania 1-0 at the time, in an important World Cup qualifier for each team. Poland went into the match second in the table with seven points, just two points ahead of Romania in the standings. UEFA World Cup qualifying won’t reconvene until March 2017.

Romanian soccer fans were previously reprimanded during EURO 2016, when there were clashes in the stands between them and Hungarian fans.

Lewandowski is Poland’s best player, and has four goals through three qualifying matches. In the most recent round of qualifying, it was Lewandowski who scored the late winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Armenia.

Lewandowski responded the only way he could: he scored two goals in the final ten minutes to put Poland ahead 3-0. After what could have been a terrible incident, Lewandowski was all smiles after the match.
