Only six teams from CONCACAF are in the final round of World Cup qualifying, with only three teams outright qualifying for Russia. After Friday’s loss, Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica all sit ahead of USA.
If USA was hoping to get right against Costa Rica, history will say they’re wrong. USMNT have failed to win in nine consecutive visits to Costa Rica, losing the previous eight. Many have had an issue with lineup tinkering from USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann, who experimented with a 3-5-2 during the team’s loss to Mexico.
Costa Rica isn’t the same World Cup darling that reached the quarterfinals in 2014, but the main talent will still pose a threat. Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz are perennial problems for US defenders, and keeper Keylor Navas still ranks among the world’s best.
