Green Bay Packers Playoff Chances: Seeding & Potential Matchups Week 17

(Getty)

The Green Bay Packers are on the cusp of their fifth division title in six years, something nobody considered possible in November. After a loss to Washington dropped them to 4-6, Aaron Rodgers promised that his team would run the table and make the playoffs. If Rodgers can lead his Packers into Ford Field Sunday night and get the win, Rodgers will fulfill his promise, win the division, and head into the postseason on a six-game winning streak.

The Packers are a slight favorite to win in Detroit, but they might have a playoff spot clinched before Sunday night’s game kicks off. Take a look at Green Bay’s possible scenarios after checking the standings:

NFC Seeding

The Division Leaders:

1. Dallas Cowboys — 13-2
2. Atlanta Falcons — 10-5
3. Seattle Seahawks — 9-5-1
4. Green Bay Packers — 9-6

The Wild Card Contenders:

5. New York Giants — 10-5
6. Detroit Lions — 9-6
7. Washington Redskins — 8-6-1
8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — 8-7
9. Minnesota Vikings — 7-8

***The Cowboys have clinched home-field advantage and NFC East
**The Seahawks have clinched the NFC West
**The Falcons have clinched the NFC South
*The Giants have clinched a Wild Card spot

Potential Wild Card Matchups:

Lions at Seahawks

Giants at Packers

Current position: 4th in NFC, tied with Lions for NFC North

Remaining schedule: at Lions

The Early Game to Watch:

If the Giants beat the Redskins, the Packers will clinch a playoff berth. The Giants have no plans to sit starters for Sunday, and a Giants win would put both the Packers and Lions into the postseason.

Sunday Night Finale:

It all comes down to the Lions. The Pack swept Detroit last year, but lost at Ford Field each of the two previous years before that. The Packers are favored, Rodgers is hot, and the Packers should end Week 17 as NFC North champions.

Unlike the Lions, the Packers cannot clinch a first-round bye on Sunday. If the Pack win, the bye goes to either Seattle or Atlanta.
