WWE Superstars John Cena and AJ Styles continued their newfound, storied rivalry by facing off for the WWE Championship at the 2017 Royal Rumble on January 29.
The match was back-and-forth all night, and when all was said and done, Cena came out on top over Styles, winning the WWE Championship and winning a world title for a record-tying 16th time.
After winning the title, Cena celebrated in the crowd with a young fan that was part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cena tied WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who held a world title 16 times (8 NWA World Championships, 6 WCW Championships and 2 WWE Championships).
Cena’s 16 title reigns include 13 WWE World Championships and 3 World Heavyweight Chamionships.
The Royal Rumble match is the latest chapter in the Cena/Styles rivalry that figures to be continuing after the Rumble. Cena had returned from an injury four months earlier than first thought and was immediately confronted, and ultimately betrayed, by the newcomer Styles. The two went back-and-forth during in pay-per-view matches with Cena winning the latest chapter.
