With five rounds remaining in CONMEBOL qualifying\, Tuesday’s meeting between Ecuador and Colombia can have massive World Cup implications.
Just one point separates Colombia and Ecuador in the South American table, but their position is all-important. Ecuador, one point below Colombia, would be forced to play a playoff match if qualifying ended today. Ecuador are boosted by playing host today: they are 4-1-1 at home in qualifying and just 2-1-4 on the road.
Colombia avoided disaster last week with a 1-0 win over Bolivia. Los Cafeteros didn’t play their best, but James Rodriguez scored the lone goal on a rebound attempt after his penalty shot was saved. James has only seven starts with Real Madrid in La Liga, and his frustrations boiled over recently when he flipped off local reporters while training in Colombia.
Brazil seems to have the top spot in South America locked up, but the next five teams (competing for four spots) are separated by just three points.
