Sergio Garcia: The 37-Year-Old Makes Spain Proud

Sergio Garcia has made his home of Castellon, Spain proud. It started a long time before his stellar week at Augusta in the 2017 Masters. Growing up, Garcia found a club as fast as he could starting to play the game at the age of three.

He learned to love the game from his father, Victor Garcia. According to the PGA Tour, Victor Garcia taught the game at Club de Campo del Mediterranean in Spain where his son would hone his skills. He has even played seven events on the PGA Tour Champions series with his most recent outing coming in 2016 at the Swiss Seniors Open.

While he has not won a major in 73 major tournament starts, Garcia has had a successful career since turning pro in 1999.

Garcia has 9 PGA Tour victories and 19 international victories. None would be as big as a win at Augusta. Garcia success on the green could be linked to the happiness he has found outside of golf.

“Getting married definitely helps. When things are going well and you are happy off the course it is easy to concentrate on the course,” Garcia told Golf Digest.

He is slated to get married to Angela Akins, a Golf Channel employee, who both share a love for golf.

A win at Augusta would be Garcia’s first victory since the 2016 AT&T Byron Nelson. Garcia has done well for himself and his family earning $44,282,131 over his career.

A 2017 Masters victory would have special significance given it is the date of Seve Ballesteros’ birthday. Ballesteros won two green jackets over his career. He passed away in 2008 after battling brain cancer.

Garcia spoke to Golf Channel about what it would mean to win the Masters on his idol’s birthday.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but it would mean – I don’t even know how much it would mean to be able to join both of my idols as a Masters winner. You know, it would be nice to have a chance and hopefully do it,” Garcia told Golf Channel.
