WWE Payback 2017: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know

WWE Payback 2017 presents one of the more unique match cards of the year.

Due to the crazy Superstar Shakeup that occurred after WrestleMania 33, several members of the Raw and SmackDown Live roster found themselves new brand homes. This major event has altered the lineup for Payback 2017 and given us some brand warfare bouts. Raw’s Bray Wyatt is looking for revenge against SmackDown Live’s Randy Orton in the 1st ever House of Horrors Match. Plus Raw’s Chris Jericho is looking to nab the United States Championship from his former best buddy (who’s now been transferred to SmackDown Live), Kevin Owens. These two cross brand bouts are joined by a host of other great matches that feature the most standout members of the Raw roster.

Here’s all the match results and highlights you need to know from WWE Payback 2017.

Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson

Winners: Enzo Amore and Big Cass!

Highlights: Enzo and Cass made sure to give the crowd their usual serving of catchphrases, plus they threw some much deserved shade at their opponents for the night. Once both teams stood across from each other, Enzo quickly assaulted Anderson. Anderson managed to get back in the fight by laying a few strikes to Enzo’s arm, then he tagged in Gallows to continue Enzo’s punishment. Anderson and Gallows took over Enzo’s arm for a good while.

Enzo finally escaped the wrath of the “Good Brothers” after laying Gallows out with a Tornado DDT. But he was unable to tag his big ally afterwards once Anderson shoved him outside the ring. Enzo made an attempt to make another desperate tag to Cass, but Gallows pulled Cass off the ring apron. When Cass finally got the hot tag, he went to town on Gallows and Anderson with his comeback offense. Gallows got saved by Anderson at the last moment, which lead to Gallows laying out Cass with a side kick. Enzo got tagged in and began getting a severe beatdown from both men. Gallows and Anderson almost landed their finisher, but Cass arrived just in time to big boot Anderson out of the ring. Enzo then got the win after rolling up Gallows in a school boy pin.

Neville (c) vs. Austin Aries (WWE Cruiserweight Championship)

Winner: Austin Aries via disqualification…

Highlights: Both Cruiserweight’s stared each other down while the crowd roared on in approval. Aries got the better of the champ during their 1st lockup. On their 2nd lockup, Neville finally got a hold of Aries by twisting his arm. Aries escaped it with his quick spirited counters and did the same once Neville tried to lock his head between his legs. Aries dropkicked him, then chose to taunt Neville. Aries elbowed Neville, then launched himself right onto Neville when he crawled to the outside. Aries climbed to the top rope, but Neville dropkicked the rope and caused him to slip groin first onto the rope. Neville finally got control of the match soon after.

During his moment of control, Neville climbed onto the middle rope to jaw jack with the audience. Aries dropkicked him during this moment of extreme cockiness and managed to get the upper hand when he came back into the ring. Neville tried to take Aries down, but Aries landed a neckbreaker on Neville on the middle rope. Then Aries used his Heat Seeking Bullet to slam Neville into the crowd barrier. Aries almost locked Neville into his Last Chancery, but Neville fought out of it. Aries then proceeded to drop Neville with his knee breaker/back suplex combo and almost hit his 450 Splash. Neville stopped that from happening, but he then got smashed with a Sunset Powerbomb when he jumped to the top rope. Aries then locked in the Last Chancery and almost got the submission victory. But Neville got so desperate to escape that he grabbed the ref so hard, it caused a disqualification. Aries won the match, but Neville still left with the title…

Seth Rollins vs. Samoa Joe

Winner: Seth Rollins!

Highlights: Joe made a beeline for Rollins’ surgically repaired knee as soon as things got underway. Rollins chopped Joe to get him away, but this didn’t phase him whatsoever. Joe began his strike assault on Rollins, but Rollins responded with a dropkick and a splash to the bigger man on the outside. Joe launched Rollins into the timekeeper’s section, but Rollins flew back out of it with a flying clothesline. Rollins then rammed Joe into the crowd barrier with two Suicide Dives. When Rollins looked to hop back into the ring, Joe grabbed his knee and injured it with a Dragon Screw right onto the middle rope. While Rollins tried to get his knee back into good shape on the outside, Joe launched himself at Rollins with a Suicide Dive of his own. Once back men got back into the ring, Joe continued targeting Rollins with some brutal knee-based offense.

Rollins tried backing Joe down with numerous chops, but Joe stuffed Rollins back into the corner and dropped him with his back elbow/Enzuguri combination. Joe then got back to torturing Rollins. Later on though, Rollins used a Flatliner to slam Joe’s face into the middle ring pad. Rollins started making his comeback after landing a Superkick on Joe. Rollins went airborne soon after, but Joe caught him and dropped him knee first into the mat. Joe then locked Rollins’ ankle into a tight submission hold to take apart his right knee even more. Rollins fought hard to finally escape and grab hold of the bottom rope. Joe stayed on top of Rollins after Powerbombing him and immediately locking him into a Boston Crab. Once again, Rollins crawled to the bottom rope in order to break the submission hold.

Joe looked to keep weakening Rollins’ knee, but Rollins saved himself after using his Slingblade neckbreaker to take down Joe. Rollins then started landing most of his signature comeback maneuvers on the bigger man. Things got hectic when Joe tried to use a Senton Drop on Rollins’ knee and Rollins dodged it time to launch right into a kneeling Superkick. Rollins slowly made his way to the top rope to land something big, but Joe followed him up there. Rollins tried to counter with a Sunset Flip Powerbomb, but his knee forbade him from doing so. Rollins still took Joe down with a Falcon Arrow and then a Frog Splash, but Joe still held on long enough to break the ref’s 3-count. Both men got to their feet and began striking each other repeatedly. Rollins soon found himself locked in Joe’s Kokina Clutch, but he almost rolled up Joe in a pin while the hold was still locked in. Rollins escaped and caught a nasty clothesline as soon as he turned to face Joe. Rollins got locked into the hold once again, but he still managed to finally roll through for the winning pin.

The Hardy Boyz (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy) (c) vs. Cesaro and Sheamus (WWE Raw Tag Team Championship)

Winners: And STILL the WWE Raw Tag Team Champions, The Hardy Boyz (Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy)!

Highlights: Cesaro and Matt Hardy were 1st up to lockup. Once Jeff got tagged in later on, he and Matt laid in a beautiful Poetry in Motion on the “Swiss Superman.” Cesaro shook off the damage sustained by that move, tagged in Sheamus and got Matt laid down. Cesaro and Sheamus worked over Matt in their corner for a while. Sheamus tried to stay on top of Matt, but Matt slipped out of a Powerslam hold and made the tag to his brother. Jeff pulled off his dropkick combination on Sheamus to weaken him a bit, but Sheamus wasn’t hurt enough to stay grounded. Sheamus used his power to shove Jeff extra hard to the outside. Once back in, Sheamus and Cesaro did their best to beat Jeff into nothingness. Sheamus used a particularly vicious kick to keep Jeff from tagging in Matt. Cesaro even landed a nasty leg drop on Jeff that was a sight to behold (he got some serious air on that one).

Jeff finally saved himself when he landed a Whisper in the Wind on both Sheamus and Cesaro. Matt ran back into the ring and began landing his signature offense on Cesaro. Jeff aided his brother by running right onto Sheamus outside the ring with an apron assisted splash. Matt looked to land a Moonsault, but he missed it and then ran right into a Jumping Uppercut from Cesaro. Cesaro then gave Matt a ride with his Giant Swing and locked him right into a Sharpshooter. Sheamus shoved Jeff right into the security barrier, then got Matt onto the top rope with a top rope Celtic Cross. Jeff broke up the pin right after, though. The match got even crazier as time wore on and ran right into Sheamus dropping Matt with a Powerslam. Jeff came off the top rope with a Swanton Bomb right onto Sheamus and got the final pin. Both team showed their respect and admiration for each other after the bell rang. But suddenly, Sheamus and Cesaro got frustrated and began beating the hell out of the championship duo. It appears that Sheamus and Cesaro have gone the full heel route.

Bayley (c) vs. Alexa Bliss (WWE Raw Women’s Championship)

Winner: And the NEW WWE Raw Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss!

Highlights: Bayley’s hometown crowd shoed a ton of love to her as the match began. This gave Bayley enough confidence to get the better of Bliss through the match’s opening moments. Bayley was relentless as she beat her up inside and outside the ring. Bayley shoved Bliss’ head into the corner ring post several times to add insult to injury. Bayley ran the rope to land another big move, but Bliss cut her off with a devastating elbow strike. Bliss began gaining more momentum as she punished Bayley for a good while. At one point, Bliss held onto Bayley as they got back into the ring after battling on the outside. But Bayley recovered by landing a chin breaker on Bliss right across the middle rope. This helped Bayley launch right into her signature comeback offense.

Bayley almost ended the match with her finisher, but Bliss broke the hold and slammed her face into the ring post corner. Both women soon found themselves on the top rope, which almost led into Bayley hitting her finisher. Bliss threw Bayley to the mat and caught her with a Code Red Powerbomb. Bliss made sure to do even more damage to Bayley with her knees, but Bayley countered by landing a nasty running knee strike of her own. Bayley then flew off the top rope with an Elbow Drop to Bliss that almost got her the win. As the match continued, Bayley began booting Bliss in the corner. When both women fought for a pin, Bayley found herself bouncing head first into the corner ring post again. Bayley tried to save herself with a quick pin soon after, but she took the ultimate loss after eating a Snap DDT.

Randy Orton (c) vs. Bray Wyatt (House of Horrors Match)

Winner: Bray Wyatt!

Highlights: Orton arrived at some unknown location via limo. He made his way onto the house’s property and was instantly startled by a nearby vehicle that started on its own. Orton slowly made his way into the abandoned home that Bray was surely creeping around in. After experiencing a few jump scares, Bray came from behind and beat the hell out of Orton. Orton eventually got in some offense of his own on Bray, but this did nothing but cause Bray to go back into hiding. Orton started making his way down some sort of tunnel. Suddenly, Bray’s hand grabbed his throat and startled him even more than before. Bray quickly found another hiding place while Orton walked into a room with a pair of creepy taunting dolls. Orton came under attack once more and even got shoved right through a wall. The fight entered the kitchen moments later and saw Orton finally get in some good strikes on his foe.

Orton became enraged due to Bray’s constant giggling. Orton attempted to beat down Bray some more, but Bray pushed him away and regained control. So much so that Bray pushed a fried right onto Orton. Bray shook off the damage he sustained and escaped the broken home. Once he left to the outside, Bray uttered his catchphrase while the house became enveloped in a shade of red. Bray made his way back into Orton’s limo and requested that he be taken back to the arena. He sung his favorite song while he was being driven back to the main location for the PPV.

Back in the arena, Bray slowly made his way to the ring. When the lights came back on, Orton could be seen standing right behind his former stable mate. Orton went to town on Bray with a steel chair and then used his Apron DDT off of an announce table. Back inside the ring, Orton signaled for the RKO but The Bollywood Boys ambushed him. Orton beat them back and eventually hit Bray with an RKO. But then Jinder Mahal cracked Orton over the head with his own WWE Championship. Bray took advantage of all this chaos by hitting Orton with his Sister Abigail for the 1-2-3. Mahal left the ring with Orton’s stolen WWE Championship and left Bray to bask in the glory of his victory.

Kevin Owens (c) vs. Chris Jericho (WWE United States Championship; The Winner Will Transfer to SmackDown Live)

Winner: And the NEW WWE United States Champion, Chris Jericho!

Highlights: Owens ran out of the ring, but Jericho gave chase and began beating on him outside the ring. Back inside the ring, both men battered each other until Owens snuck outside the ring again. Y2J laid Owens out with a top rope reverse elbow, then went right back to laying in more punches on him. Y2J then dropped Owens with a Bulldog and looked to land a Lionsault, but Owens rolled out to the ring once more. Jericho went for his Springboard Dropkick, but Owens slammed his head into the ring post. Owens then landed his Cannonball Splash into Jericho while he was laid in the timekeeper’s section. Back in the ring, Owens began controlling Jericho with his chinlock hold. Jericho looked to escape, but Owens maintained control over him still with reversal attacks.

Jericho finally managed to break out of Owens’ grasp, but Owens sidestepped him and caused Jericho to trip through the middle rope to the outside. Back in the ring, Jericho started making a comeback by laying in a few strikes and then finishing it off with a flying Double Axe Handle. Jericho then launched right into his signature comeback offense to further incapacitate Owens. Both men started exchanging holds with each other back and forth. Owens got the better of Y2J at one point by getting his knees up to counter a Lionsault and then hitting a Cannonball Splash on him in the corner. Owens looked to land his Pop Up Powerbomb, but Y2J flipped out of it and locked Owens into his Walls of Jericho for several grueling moments. Owens managed to break the hold by locking one finger onto the bottom rope.

Back outside the ring, Jericho began focusing his offense on Owens’ now injured hand. Both men got back into the ring, which saw Owens thumb Y2J in the eye. Owens almost landed his finisher again, but his weakened hand caused that attempt to fail. Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho once more for the win. Chris Jericho is moving to SmackDown Live as the US Champion now!

Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman

Winner: Braun Strowman!

Highlights: A patched up Reigns threw himself at Braun and began striking him down. Reigns forced Braun to the outside and even caught him off guard with a flying clothesline. Braun managed to move out of the way when Reigns looked to come over the top rope right onto him, but this did nothing but force Reigns to continue striking him. Braun shook off Reigns’ offense and began doing his worst to him. Reigns got slammed onto the ring apron, then chokeslammed onto an announce table. Braun then took his time dismantling Reigns while the dueling crowd expressed their feelings for the injured hero. Braun tried crushing Reigns’ injured ribs by locking his huge arms around them for a submission hold attempt. Reigns suffered for a bit until he escaped the hold and caused Braun to ram himself into the corner ring post. Reigns did his best to get Braun up on his shoulders afterward and plant him with a Samoan Drop.

Reigns began using his clothesline strikes in the corner to do more damage to Braun. He then shoved Braun over the top rope to the outside and then used his Drive-By dropkick to do even more damage. Reigns almost took Braun out with a Spear, but Braun caught him in midair and looked to land a Powerslam. Reigns slipped out of the hold and cause Braun to slam his head into the ring post. Back in the ring, Reigns finally landed a Spear on his behemoth of a foe. Braun still held on for dear life, though. Braun ate two Superman Punches and almost another Spear, but he shook them off still! Braun locked Reigns into a front face lock and then planted his back to the mat with two Running Powerslam’s. This was enough to keep Reigns down for the final pin. Braun wasn’t finished with Reigns, though. He brought one of the steel ring steps into the ring with him and dropped Reigns chest first onto it. Then Braun used those same steel steps to crush Reigns’ ribs. Braun walked off while backstage officials tended to Reigns as he coughed up blood.
