Always Dreaming won the Kentucky Derby with an official time of 2:03:59. Lookin at Lee came in second, Battle of Midway ran third and Classic Empire was fourth. The 2017 Kentucky Derby was being described as a wide-open race with no clear favorite.
Trainer Todd Pletcher got the second Derby winner of his career in the race where he tied the record for the most starts in the history of the race with 48. Jockey John Velazquez got his second Derby win as well.
Much like his win at the Florida Derby, Always Dreaming pulled away from the field to comfortably win the Kentucky Derby.
Classic Empire started the week as the morning line favorite after his impressive Arkansas Derby victory. By the time the race started, he was passed in the odds by both Always Dreaming and Irish War Cry.
Part of the reason for the skepticism on Classic Empire was the inconsistency he showed during prep season. He battled injuries including a foot abscess that sidelined him for part of his training. There were also training sessions where he refused to train.
Always Dreaming emerged as a contender after his impressive win in the Florida Derby by a comfortable margin. The Florida Derby has a recent history of producing Derby winners and the race continued that trend this year.
