Brock Lesnar has defeated Samoa Joe, therefore retaining his WWE Universal Championship. So what’s next for The Beast Incarnate? Who will he face in the coming weeks?

The plan is reportedly for Brock Lesnar’s next opponent to be Roman Reigns, though one report suggests that it will be Braun Strowman.

All the way back in March, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that the WWE was going to have Brock Lesnar win the Universal Championship at WrestleMania and hold on to it until WrestleMania 34, when he would face Roman Reigns in the main event. In the weeks following Lesnar’s win at WrestleMania, it was reported that Lesnar was to face Braun Strowman for the title, and then a few other opponents throughout the year including Finn Balor and Seth Rollins. It would all be building up to a match at WrestleMania 34 against Roman Reigns, a match that The Big Dog would reportedly win.

But according to wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the WWE adjusted their plans recently, and they’re no longer going to save the Roman Reigns match for WrestleMania 34. Instead, the Wrestling Observer recently reported that Brock Lesnar will face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.

“It was confirmed to us that a few weeks ago, probably just before the Roman Reigns interview where he said he wanted a shot at the Brock Lesnar vs. Samoa Joe winner, that plans for SummerSlam on 8/20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn changed from Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman as the main event to Lesnar vs. Reigns,” the Wrestling Observer reported on June 29th.

Brock Lesnar almost certainly will not be defending the Universal Championship before SummerSlam, as SummerSlam is the next pay-per-view involving Raw superstars.

It’s not currently known what the outcome of that match will be. The plan was reportedly originally for Roman Reigns to defeat Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 34, so it’s possible the WWE has just moved this up, and Roman will win at SummerSlam.

One piece of evidence that Roman will defeat Brock at SummerSlam is that according to the Wrestling Observer, the new plan for the main event of WrestleMania 34 is a match between Roman Reigns and John Cena. This explains why John Cena returned as a “free agent,” meaning he can face both Raw and SmackDown Live superstars. We don’t know for sure whether that WrestleMania match will be for the Universal Championship, though.

There has been some conflicting information about Lesnar’s next title defense, however, with Sportskeeda reporting that Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34 is still the plan and that at SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar will face Braun Strowman for the Universal Championship. The fact that Braun Strowman defeated Roman Reigns at Great Balls of Fire might be read as evidence supporting the idea that Strowman will be Lesnar’s opponent, but there’s still six weeks to go until SummerSlam, and that’s plenty of time for Roman to regain the upper hand and establish himself as the number one contender.

SummerSlam will air on August 20th, 2017 on the WWE Network.
