Bayley will no longer be competing at SummerSlam due to an injury, the WWE has just announced.
In a video posted on the company’s social media pages, WWE host Mike Rome made the announcement that Bayley’s shoulder injury will take her out of action and force her to miss the August pay-per-view.
“We found out after her evaluations this morning that Bayley will not be at SummerSlam,” Rome said. “She’s got a separated shoulder.”
Rome went on to say that Bayley will be on Monday Night Raw on August 7th to address the injury and her future.
So what will happen to the Raw Women’s Championship match at SummerSlam? Well, the WWE said in this announcement video that there will be two triple threat matches tonight, and the winners will face off next week to determine who will get the match against Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam. It’s unclear who will be in which triple threat match, but there are only six women active on the Raw roster not including Alexa Bliss and Bayley, so we know that the competitors in the triple threat matches will be Alicia Fox, Dana Brooke, Emma, Mickie James, Nia Jax, and Sasha Banks.
Bayley sustained her shoulder injury during a match against Nia Jax on Raw last week. It seems to have happened when Nia Jax threw Bayley out of the ring; you can see that moment in the match here.
All signs are pointing towards this being a legitimate injury, although it’s always possible that this is a work and that Bayley will still perform at SummerSlam. After all, it would make sense from a story perspective for Bayley, after being mocked by Alexa Bliss for not being “extreme” enough, to come back from an injury far earlier than expected or fight in a match despite her injury. It’s also possible that Bayley really was injured but that the WWE is exaggerating the severity of the injury for dramatic purposes, like when Braun Strowman was recently injured but the WWE acted as if he would be out for six months rather than just a few weeks.
Assuming the injury is real, though, this is obviously horrible news for Bayley, who had a major opportunity ahead of her with a title match in her very first SummerSlam. The WWE has not yet provided any estimated recovery time for Bayley, but she’ll likely be gone for at least four to six weeks even in the best case scenario.
