Preview
When the NBA was putting together the schedule for opening night, pitting together the two Eastern conference finalists from a year ago was obviously alluring. But they couldn’t have dreamed of what would happen during the offseason.
Kyrie Irving requested a trade, was traded to Boston in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and a pair of draft picks, and suddenly the NBA opener became even more compelling, as Irving will return to Cleveland to take on his old team and old teammates.
Of course, there will be plenty of other storylines to watch, too. Gordon Hayward’s debut with the Celtics after signing a $127 million deal in the offseason. Dwyane Wade and LeBron–health permitting–back together again. The NBA debut of Jayson Tatum, who has looked buttery smooth offensively during Summer League and preseason. Oh yeah, and there’s also the fact that these are widely regarded as the two favorites in the East once again.
It would be difficult to conjure up a better scenario to start the season.
