2017 World Series Preview

After going just 12-17 in September, the Dodgers have woken up at the right time. They swept the Diamondbacks–a team in which they struggled against during the regular season–in the NLDS and then proceeded to make relatively easy work of the defending World Series champs in five games.

During those eight postseason games, the Dodgers have scored 48 runs (6.0 per game), hit 13 home runs and own an OPS of .872, while the pitching has been especially dominant with a team ERA of 2.28 and WHIP of 0.76(!!). It doesn’t get much more complete than that.

The Astros haven’t been nearly as consistent or balanced with their run to the Fall Classic. Though they swept the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS, they needed seven games–and two elimination-game wins–to dispatch of the New York Yankees. The hitting, which has been so dominant all year, disappeared in the ALCS, as they owned a slash line of .187/.271/.294 with just four home runs and 20 runs scored in those seven games.

Fortunately for Houston, its starters showed up at the right time, as Justin Verlander tossed seven scoreless in Game 6, and Charlie Morton and Lance McCullers followed it with a combined shutout in Game 7 to save the day.

Nevertheless, while the Dodgers looked the more complete team in the Championship Series, this still has the makings for a an all-time great World Series, with the Dodgers’ historically good pitching staff matching up against the Astros’ historically good hitting.

It’s not something you’re going to want to miss.
