WWE Hell in a Cell 2017: The Results & Highlights You Need to Know

The most heated feuds in WWE have been settled under the most dangerous conditions.

Street Fights, Last Man Standing affairs, TLC spectacles and more have all played the part as battleground for super intense rivalries. One of the most intimidating structures in pro wrestling is the dreaded Hell in a Cell. SmackDown Live have been bestowed the honor of putting the match card together for this year’s HIAC event and, to put it simply, they did a fine job. Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon, plus The New Day and The Usos will finally settle their differences within the massive steel cage. Also on the card, AJ Styles will defend his US Championship against Baron Corbin while WWE Champion Jinder Mahal will lock horns once again with Shinsuke Nakamura.

If you’re looking for all the match results and highlights of everything that took place at HIAC 2017, you’ve come to the right place.

Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin vs. The Hype Bros (Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder)

WWE.com

Winners: Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin!

Highlights: Gable and Mojo started the match for their respective teams. Both men got into a lockup war, but Gable got the better of Mojo and tagged in Shelton. Shelton kept working over Mojo’s arm before he tagged Gable back in to continue the job. Mojo eventually broke free and got into a move exchange war with Gable and then pulled off a tag team maneuver with Ryder. Ryder laid in a few moves of his own Gable, but Gable dodged a dropkick from him at the lats second. Ryder decided to show some respect to his opponent, then Shelton got tagged in to give Ryder someone new to contend with. Shelton and Ryder went back and forth for a few moments until Ryder laid out his hand to shake Shelton’s. Shelton seemed to be down to show some respect to Ryder too, but it was all a ruse since he gave Ryder a quick Spinebuster that forced to him to roll out of the ring.

Once Ryder made his way back in, Shelton and Gable took turns weakening Ryder even more. At one point, Ryder laid in a quick punch to Gable. That did nothing but piss him off even more and cause him to lay in some stiff strikes to Ryder in the corner. When Shelton got back in, he looked to land something big on Ryder from the top rope. But Ryder saved himself by pushing Shelton down to the mat and then coming off the ropes to hit him with a Missile Dropkick.

Ryder finally got the hot tag to Mojo, who went on to land a big series of moves on Gable. After a flood of moves were handed to him, Gable recovered and got back at Mojo with a Belly to Belly Suplex and a beautiful Moonsault. Gable and Shelton then worked together to land a big tandem maneuver on Mojo, but it wasn’t enough to end him. Shelton tried striking down Mojo some more, but it did nothing but get him hype. The end of the match was almost at hand when The Hype Bros had a moment of miscommunication that led to Ryder eating a Paydirt. Mojo saved his boy before he met his end. However, he was unable to save Ryder after he got dropped by a Powerbomb/Clothesline Neckbreaker maneuver.

Randy Orton vs. Rusev

WWE.com

Winner: Randy Orton!

Highlights: “The Super Athlete” and “The Viper” quickly locked up and went toe to toe with counters. Orton got himself free from Rusev’s grasp and almost landed a match ending RKO, but Rusev slipped out of his grasp and slipped out to the outside. Once the match restarted, Rusev ended up flipping Orton to the outside and laying into him to force him down to the arena floor. Rusev followed him and used a Fallaway Slam to fling him into the crowd barrier. Rusev then threw Orton back into the ring and crushed him with strikes and a tight chinlock hold. Orton managed to escape, slip out of the ring and then catch Rusev off guard by dropping him back first onto the crowd barrier. This didn’t incapacitate Rusev for too long, though. Rusev got back to his feet and clotheslined Orton as soon as “The Viper” turned back to face him.

Both men got back inside the ring to continue their match. Rusev seemed to be in control again, but his cocksure attitude led to him running face first into the ring post. Orton took advantage of this mistake by nailing Rusev with his signature comeback offense. Orton looked to land his middle rope DDT, but Rusev countered him by landing another Fallaway Slam that was followed up by a roundhouse kick. Rusev then signaled for his Accolade submission, but Orton broke the hold and ran to the outside. This further angered Rusev, who chose to follow Orton to the outside and crack him with a Superkick. Rusev then looked to land a big splash from the top rope to Orton in the ring, but Orton moved out of the way just in the nick of time. Orton responded to Rusev’s top rope error by landing his middle rope DDT. Orton almost landed an RKO, but Rusev shocked him by getting up in time to almost lock in The Accolade. Orton slipped out just in time to land a nasty RKO that nabbed him the win.

Bobby Roode vs. Dolph Ziggler

WWE.com

Winner: Booby Roode!

Highlights: Ziggler decided to follow up Roode’s flashy entrance by arriving to nothing but boos. Once the match got underway, both men countered each other during their many starting exchanges. Roode’s cockiness out shined everything Ziggler tried to pull off. Ziggler found himself on the losing end of everything near the start as he was clotheslined and knocked down repeatedly. Ziggler finally got the upper hand when he dropped Roode’s neck over the top rope and then dropkicked him. Soon after, Ziggler controlled the offense as he kept Roode grounded for a good while. Ziggler finally locked in a sleeper hold and almost caused Roode to go unconscious. Roode woke back up, got to his feet and responded to Ziggler’s hold by landing a back suplex. Ziggler recovered and trued to ram his shoulder into Roode’s gut in the corner, but Roode moved and forced Ziggler to instead ram his shoulder into the ring post.

Roode then began landing his signature comeback moves on a now weakened Ziggler. Roode stayed on top of Ziggler for a while until Ziggler fed him a DDT. Ziggler locked in another sleeper hold, but Roode escaped once again. Roode’s back suplex counter failed this time though and led right to Ziggler landing his Fame Asser. Ziggler signaled for the Superkick and almost landed it, but Roode dodged him and landed a big Spinebuster. Roode tried to land his Glorious DDT, but Ziggler tried rolling him and using his tights to get the dirty win. Both men pulled the same trick on each other multiple times until Roode finally succeeded with it. After the bell rang, Ziggler fed Roode a Zig Zag and left the ring in a particularly pissed off mood…

AJ Styles (c) vs. Baron Corbin vs. Tye Dillinger (Triple Threat Match for the WWE United States Championship)

WWE.com

Winner: And the NEW United States Champion, Baron Corbin!

Highlights: All three men almost locked up simultaneously, but then AJ and Tye focused their attention on Baron. Baron slipped to the outside, but both men decided to follow him. Baron then ran back into the ring, but AJ and Tye ran in with him and beat him down. Baron got beaten to the outside while AJ and Tye began pummeling each other. AJ got the better of their exchange when he landed a “Phenomenal” dropkick on Tye. AJ went for something big to follow that move up, but Baron tripped him up when he ran to the ropes. Baron ran into to work on Tye, but Tye dodged his offense and responded with some repeated top rope punches. Baron shook them off and pushed Tye to the outside and then began focusing on damaging the champ. At one point, Tye got himself back into the ring to land something big on AJ in the corner. AJ flipped out of Tye’s move, but Baron ran in to clothesline Tye then throw AJ right into him. AJ then got flung right into the bottom of the ring post.

Baron continued to control the match by preventing AJ from getting back into the ring while he worked on Tye. Baron made the mistake on going to the outside to work on the champ, but AJ woke back up in time to slam Baron into the crowd barrier. This pissed off Baron, who decided to send AJ right into the same crowd barrier. Baron ran back into the ring to lock in a submission on Tye while the crowd berated him. Tye broke the hold, which led to Baron finding himself on the ropes. AJ tried jumping back into the ring, but Baron clocked him in the jaw with a slick punch before he could. Baron then turned his attention right back to Tye. When AJ revived himself, he finally got a second wind by landing several strikes on the larger Baron. AJ was unable to keep Baron on his shoulders for a follow up move, but he was able to clock him with an Enzuguri.

AJ tried to land his Styles Clash, but Corbin proved too heavy to get hit with it. Baron found himself pushed to the outside and put on the receiving end of an AJ knee strike. Tye then got his second wind as he laid in “Perfect 10” punches on AJ and then one for Corbin on the ring apron. Tye then began landing his comeback maneuvers on the champ while Baron remained laid out. Soon, AJ looked like he was on the verge of landing a Styles Clash on Tye but Tye prevented it from happening. But Tye was unable to counter AJ’s next move – the Calf Crusher. Tye writhed in pain for a while and looked like he was close to tapping, but Baron pulled Tye right out of the Calf Crusher and straight to the outside. AJ followed Baron to the outside with an elbow assisted plancha. Back inside the ring, Baron fed Tye a Deep Six and then AJ a Chokeslam into a Backbreaker.

Afterwards, all three men exchanged corner strikes and other signature maneuvers with each other. After getting caught with a an AJ Pele, Tye fell right on top of Baron and almost got the winning pin. Bu Baron shoved him away before the 3-count. AJ woke up just in time to land his Springboard 450 Splash on Baron, but Tye broke up the following pin attempt. AJ and Tye then began landing stiff shots on each other. AJ finally rid of Tye with a Phenomenal Elbow, but Baron booted him to the outside and stole his pin to claim the title.

Natalya (c) vs. Charlotte Flair (WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship)

WWE.com

Winner: Charlotte by disqualification…

Highlights: Both ladies went hold for hold and strike for strike once the bell rang. Charlotte almost locked in the Figure Four Leglock at one point, but Natalya quickly saved herself. Charlotte then angered the champ with constant taunting and counters, which forced Natalya to begin beating down Charlotte’s leg. Natalya did her best to use submissions and repeated boots to weaken Charlotte’s injured leg. Natalya almost got her leg offense stopped when Charlotte got back to her feet, but Natalya stayed on top of the challenger by landing a Discus Clothesline. Natalya looked to remain in control, but Charlotte finally got her adrenaline going by landing a series of chops on the champ. Charlotte looked to then come off the top rope onto Natalya with a Moonsault, but Natalya took her from the top and dropped her to the mat with a Sitdown Powerbomb.

Natalya went to land another Discus Clothesline afterwards, but Charlotte fought through the pain of her injured leg and countered with a big boot. On the outside, both women fought hard to regain control. Natalya won the battle by shoving Charlotte’s bad leg into the steel steps. Back inside the ring, Natalya finally locked Charlotte into the Sharpshooter. Charlotte looked as if tapping was next on her agenda, but she chose to flip Natalya over her into the ring pad. Natalya soon found herself shoved to the outside and then planted by a Moonsault from Charlotte. Sadly, the match got thrown out as soon as Natalya used a steel chair to wear out Charlotte’s injured leg…

The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and/or Xavier Woods) (c) vs. The Usos (Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso)
(Tag Team Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship)

WWE.com

Winners: And the NEW SmackDown Tag Team Champions, The Usos!

Highlights: The New Day made sure to big themselves up and taunt their opponents for the evening. Big E decided to ditch his happy, go lucky nature and throw some biblical disses at The Usos’ way. Xavier and Big E decided to represent their team while Kofi watched on the outside. Both teams immediately retrieved some weapons from underneath the ring to start the match’s proceedings. The weapons eventually fell to the mat once all four men tore into each other. Woods used a Roaring Elbow on Jimmy, then used a steel chain assisted fist drop (with come hang time assistance from Big E) to smash that same twin in the face. Big E tried to spear Jey while he was on the ring apron, but he missed and slammed right into the cell. Woods then went airborne on Jey, but Jimmy came right over the top rope onto him as well. When Big E recovered, he finally landed his big Spear on Jey into the cell.

Back in the ring, Woods used two of his trusty trombones, a gong and even a cowbell to beat Jey down. Woods and Big E looked to land their finisher, but Jimmy threw a steel chair right into Woods’ face. Big E then got laid out by a Superkick from Jey. Jimmy and Jey soon recovered and used Kendo Sticks to lay into Big E repeatedly with vicious strikes. When The Usos’ went to the outside, they tortured Woods by stuffing a Kendo Stick into his face and feeding him a running rear end strike to him right into the cage. Back inside the ring, The Usos found themselves taken down by a few Big E moves. Jimmy almost got more Big E offense fed to him, but he used a Superkick to save himself. Jimmy went to land something else afterwards, but he ran right into a tag team maneuver from Big E and Woods. The Midnight Hour finally landed on Jimmy, but Jey saved his brother from the following pin.

The action returned to the outside and saw Woods using a multicolored Kendo Stick on Jey. Jey ended up getting trapped behind four of them while Woods struck him over and over. Afterwards, Woods and Big E focused their attention on Jimmy. Jey managed to free himself from Kendo Stick captivity, save his brother and Superkick Woods. Big E ended up on Jey’s arms, which led to Jimmy noticing and then landing a big Suicide Dive to him right into the cell. Once Big E got rolled back into the ring, he was smashed into the mat with two big top rope splashes from The Usos. Somehow, he still managed to kick out of the following pin attempt. The Usos reverted to some extra sinister means by using handcuffs to lock up Woods and Big E. Woods got fed several Kendo Stick shots while he was stuck to the ring post. Big E got himself free from the handcuffs and started going to town on Jimmy and Jey. Big E put Jey on his shoulder and shoved him into the cell twice (on the second time, he shoved him right into Jimmy).

Big E ended up landing his Big Ending on Jey inside the ring, but Jimmy ran into save him from being pinned. Big E ended up locking in a Stretch Muffler on Jimmy, but Jey fed him a Superkick to break the submission. Big E then got smashed by a double top rope splash and looked like he was on the verge of defeat. But Woods came in at the last second to save his man. Woods got destroyed by several Kendo Stick strikes, but he got revved up to the point where he shook some of them off and began assaulting the twins with a headbutt and punches. But in the end, Woods got smashed with a double top rope splash while a steel chair was placed atop his prone body.

Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens (Hell in a Cell Falls Count Anywhere Match)

WWE.com

Winner: Kevin Owens!

Highlights: Owens looked to scared to enter the confines of the HIAC. This trepidation forced Shane to run full steam ahead at Owens and use a baseball dropkick on him. This forced Owens to the outside where the match officially began. Shane laid in all types of punches and unique kicks, yet Owens still fought back by shoving Shane back first into the cell. Owens took a breather by going into the structure and locking himself behind the door. But Shane didn’t let this stop him from using a pump kick on Owens to re-open the door. Owens got back into the fight by brutalizing Shane all over the cell and taunting him in front of his kids. Owens grabbed some nearby steel steps, but Shane used a few punches to stop him from using them. The match got back into the ring, which saw Owens continue torturing Shane by using his Jumping Senton splash on his prone body.

Owens then used his Cannonball Splash to squish Shane in the bottom ring corner. Owens looked to further damage Shane O’Mac by coming off the top rope with a Senton Splash, but Shane got his knees up to counter him. Owens held onto his back Shane laid into him with punches, a jumping back elbow strike and a DDT. Shane tried to follow up that series of moves with a Shooting Star Press, but Owens moved out of the way. Then Owens managed to land his top rope move attempt – a devastating Frog Splash. Owens then tried to land his finisher, but Shane countered it by locking Owens’ head into a leglock submission. Owens struggled to break the hold, but Shane kept it locked on for a good while. Both men ended up on the outside, which led to Owens powerbombing Shane onto the steel steps in order to break the submission hold. Owens finally picked up a table and planted Shane onto it. Owens looked to land on Shane with another Cannonball Splash, but Shane moved and caused Owens to crash right through the table.

While Owens crawled away in pain, Shane used a part of the broken table to smash Owens across the back. Shane then threw in a trash can to the excitement of the crowd. After setting up Owens in the corner with the trash can, Shane took flight and landed his Coast to Coast dropkick on Owens. Strangely, Owens saved himself from breaking the pin by putting a foot on the rope. Shane then set his eyes on the top of the cell and got the bright idea to do something off the top of it. When the refs refused to open the cell door, Shane picked up a pair of bolt cutters to break open the lock. Shane achieved his goal by opening the cell door and then brining Owens back to the outside. While they were brawling, Owens low blowed Shane and DDT’d him into the entrance ramp. Owens then smashed Shane’s “Family Jewels” into the door’s edge. Owens continued to punish Shane by throwing him into the cell’s outside walls and smashing the announcer’s table top onto him.

Owens placed Shane onto one of the announcer’s tables and looked to land a big move on him from atop the crowd barrier railing. But Owens chose to climb the HIAC and signal for something even bigger. But his fears seemed to stop him jumping off the top. During Owens’ moments of confusion, Shane woke up and began climbing up the tall structure. Owens met Shane at the top with continued punches, but Shane fed Owens one of his own. Both men then clobbered each other with repeated punches. Shane slipped behind Owens and slammed him down with a Russian Leg Sweep. Then he followed that up by dropping Owens with a bodyslam. Shane continued assaulting Owens on top of the cell by landing more punches and slamming Owens down with a suplex. Owens finally caught his breath and got Shane down long enough to land his Senton Splash. Owens signaled for a Powerbomb, but Shane flipped him over and caused Owens to land on his back and ankle.

Owens and Shane exchanged several punches, but Owens got the best of Shane again by landing his Pop Up Powerbomb. The crowd looked on in fear as the cell’s top portion remained intact even after that Powerbomb took place. Owens and Shane got back into a striking war even after all that chaos unfolded. Owens decided to ditch Shane by climbing down the cell, but Shane followed him. Shane cracked Owens with tons of punches that led to Owens falling down and crashing through one of the announcer’s tables. Ringside officials tended to Owens, but Shane caused them to stop by getting his hands on Owens to hand out more punishment. Shane headbutted Owens for good measure and laid him atop another announcer’s table. Shane ascended up the cell while Owens laid unconscious on the table below him. Shane then fell from the heavens to drop a match ending elbow, but Owens got saved by a mysterious figure at the last moment. That cloaked individual ended up being Sami Zayn! While the EMT’s tended to both men, Zayn forced Owens atop Shane’s broken body while the ref counted to three.

Jinder Mahal (c) (with The Singh Brothers) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Championship)

WWE.com

Winner: And STILL the WWE Champion, Jinder Mahal!

Highlights: Jinder was caught off guard with several quick kicks from Nakamura. This forced the champ to focus on getting ahold of his foe’s arm and cutting off his strikes. Nakamura took note of that and broke the champ’s arm hold and almost locked in an armbar. Jinder’s anger caused him to fall victim to Nakamura’s taunting and continued strikes. Nakamura almost landed his finishing knee strike, but Jinder exited the ring before it could happen. Nakamura followed him, which proved to be a mistake since the champ threw him into the ring post and then into the crowd. Once the match returned to the ring, Jinder used everything in his arsenal to work on Nakamura’s back. Mahal then focused on his neck by locking in a chinlock submission. Nakamura got to his feet and then used his striking ability to knock Jinder down.

Once Nakamura got going, he used several chest kicks and more of his patented strikes to lay down the champ. Later on, Nakamura laid out Jinder’s backup on the outside and then slammed a running knee into Jinder on the ring apron. However, Nakamura’s follow-up jumping knee strike missed and caused him to get suplexed back into the ring. Jinder then dropped a knee of his own and almost landed his finisher, but the challenger wiggled out of it. Nakamura found himself on the top rope and then came down on the champ with a knee strike. Mahal’s boys stuck their head into the match again and again, but the ref eventually ejected them both. Nakamura finally landed a Kinshasa on Jinder, but Jinder broke the following pin by grabbing the bottom rope. Nakamura signaled for another one, but Jinder simply escaped it by leaving the ring. The ending soon arrived when Nakamura slammed his knee into the ring post, which led to Jinder grabbing him from behind and planting him with the Khallas.
