Continuing with what has been the theme all season, Ezekiel Elliott was suspended. Then he wasn’t again.
And that’s a really unfortunate break for Kansas City. While Elliott has been running over defenses to the tune of 98.6 rushing yards per game (second in the NFL), the Chiefs have been getting trampled in the running game, as they rank 29th in yards per attempt allowed (4.9) and 31st in Football Outsiders’ run defense efficiency rankings.
Knowing this very well could be Zeke’s last game for seven weeks, don’t be surprised if the Cowboys unleash him in a major way to take advantage of Kansas City’s weakness.
Of course, the other side of the ball could yield a similar gameplan. Last week marked the first time in Kareem Hunt’s promising career he didn’t reach 100 yards from scrimmage, but he still leads the league in that regard, he’s still a nightmare to tackle, and the Cowboys are 25th in the NFL in yards per carry allowed.
“He’s the engine behind that offense,” said Cowboys coach Jason Garrett. “They really like to hand him the football. He’s a very instinctive runner. He’s a strong runner. He breaks a lot of tackles. He’s got very good vision. He’s been one of those guys who’s been steady for them but also has made a lot of plays for them. He’s a real challenge for any defense.”
Moreover, with both teams also boasting explosive passing games–it still feels a little weird to write that about Alex Smith, but the Chiefs rank first in the NFL in yards per pass attempt at 8.4–we are likely headed for a shootout.
The over/under sits at an already-high 53.5 (highest of the week), but even that number will be easily surpassed if both of these offenses are playing at their highest level.
Buckle up.
