With the tragic terror attack that occurred recently on a bike path in New York City, extra security measures have been taken to ensure the safety of runners, along with race-goers. FOX News has reported that security includes hundreds of extra officers who are in plain clothes blending in, armed counterterrorism commandos, bomb-sniffing canines and rooftop snipers. The New York Police Department has also said that they will be using blocker vehicles that they have never used for an event before, in order to provide even more protection. The NYPD has also noted that there has not been any credible threat against the race. Governor Andrew Cuomo also said that there is added security at nearby airports. Plus, state police, the National Guard, the state Office of Emergency Management and additional agencies will be providing added security. The tunnels and bridges will also have more security. Many marathon runners have voiced that they feel very safe. One runner named Bill told CBS New York, “I used to be a soldier in the British military, I served with the Department of Defense in Iraq for well over a year, I’ve served in Baghdad and Tikrit, so if they couldn’t get me after two years there it doesn’t overly concern me if I’m running a marathon in New York.”
