Bears GM Ryan Poles Reveals Expected Return for No. 1 Pick

Poles King #1 Return

Getty Bears general manager Ryan Poles has his eyes on a major return for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

The speculation about what time of return the Chicago Bears could get for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft has seemed to run rampant at times, but it sounds like the Bears’ general manager is angling for multiple first-rounders.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles recently spoke with NFL national insider Peter King and revealed he spoke with three teams at the NFL Scouting Combine about a possible trade for the top pick in the draft. He also said he believes he can get both “a [2024 first-rounder] and a ’25 one”  in a deal to trade down from the No. 1 spot.

“No one’s gonna rush me,” Poles said Football Morning in America column for March 6. “I know I can get a ’24 one and a ’25 one. You’re telling me for the next two years I’ll have two ones? That’s either four really good players, or if we’re cruising, we can still trade back.”

The Bears have about one week until the legal tampering period opens for NFL teams to begin negotiating with pending free agents, but it remains to be seen whether Poles will be aggressive in trying to trade the pick before or near the start of free agency. A trade before the new league year begins on March 15 could net them a valuable player that would help guide their decision-making process in free agency. Waiting, however, could produce a greater return from a QB-desperate team that needs the top pick to select their quarterback of the future.
