The Dallas Cowboys have made several roster moves, including signing former Denver Broncos tight end Eric Saubert. Heading into Week 8, the Cowboys released offensive tackle Alex Taylor-Prioleau and linebacker Mikel Jones, creating a total of four open roster spots on the team’s practice squad.

“TRANSACTIONS: The DallasCowboys have signed TE Eric Saubert (Drake, 2017 5th round pick), LB Buddy Johnson (Texas A&M, 2021 4th round pick), G Chris Glaser (Virginia, 2022 UDFA) and G Adam Pankey (West Virginia, 2017 UDFA) to the practice squad,” DallasCowboys.com’s Nick Harris posted on X on October 24, 2023. “All four p-squad spots filled. Dallas now has a completely full roster meaning the team would need to release a player if they were to sign additional vets.”

After Saubert’s standout career at Drake, the Atlanta Falcons selected him in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. In addition to Atlanta, Saubert has had short stints with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Denver Broncos. Saubert signed with the Dolphins over the offseason, but Miami waived the tight end on September 6 on an injury designation.

Dallas Cowboys News: Linebacker Buddy Johnson Was Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 4th Round of the 2021 NFL Draft

Johnson was born in Dallas and played at Texas A&M, making the move somewhat of a homecoming. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him with the No. 140 overall pick in the fourth round of the 2021 draft. Johnson played in four games for Pittsburgh in 2021 before the team released him in August 2022.

He went on to have short stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans during the 2022 season. Most recently, Johnson signed with the Bears over the offseason before being waived in August as a result of an injury.

New Dallas Cowboys Tight End Eric Saubert Started 6 Games for the Denver Broncos in 2022

Both linebacker and tight end have been frequently mentioned as potential trade targets in the latest Cowboys rumors. Saubert is coming off his best NFL season with Denver, posting 15 receptions for 148 yards and one touchdown appearing in all 17 games, including six starts, in 2022.

Heading into the 2017 draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Saubert to Jace Amaro, praising his “eye-popping potential.”

“Tape study is absolutely maddening on Saubert as it roller coasters from eye-popping potential to lapses in concentration and effort as a blocker,” Zierlein wrote in the tight end’s pre-draft profile. “Saubert’s speed and athleticism will get him open and he should test well at the combine. Teams will have to balance the flashes with the drops and decide how early they want to pull the trigger on a tight end with starter’s potential but a low floor.”

Cowboys Rumors: Dallas May Look to Trade for a Linebacker or Corner

The Cowboys have until the NFL trade deadline on October 31 to strike a potential deal. Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson wrote Dallas could make a trade, but it is unlikely to be at a blockbuster level.

“If anything, I think what Dallas is going to be looking for is an equitable mid-level deal that could either help with depth at linebacker or in the secondary,” Robinson wrote on October 20. “I do not see it being a blowout pursuit.”
