Packers Add Ex-Seahawks Receiver to Practice Squad: Report

Getty Caleb Scott #9 of the Vanderbilt Commodores misses a catch for a first down late in the fourth quarter of the game against the Florida Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on November 7, 2015 in Gainesville, Florida.

Another pass-catcher has landed a job in Green Bay.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers are signing former Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Caleb Scott to fill one of the two openings on their practice squad. He was one of the six players who had worked out for the Packers over the weekend.

The Packers officially announced the move later in the day on their transactions lists.

Scott went undrafted in 2018 as a 6-foot-2, 203-pound prospect coming out of Vanderbilt, where he averaged 14.7 yards on 72 career receptions with four touchdowns. He signed with Seattle and spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad, earning a reserve/future contract with the team for the following year before an offseason injury ruined his opportunity.

Scott has been a free agent since the Seahawks waived him off the non-football injury list a few practices into their 2019 training camp.

The Packers once again house three wide receivers on their practice squad with Scott joining Reggie Begelton and former Buffalo Bills wideout Robert Foster. The previous third, Darrius Shepherd, was promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 3’s trip to New Orleans with star wideout Davante Adams ailing from a hamstring injury.

The Packers still have one space to fill on their 16-player practice squad after bringing up both Shepherd and tight end John Lovett to the 53-man roster.

How Will Packers Approach WR in Week 4?

One of the biggest questions for the Packers coming into Week 4 is whether Adams will return to the fold against the Falcons or send a second straight game on the sidelines as he continues to nurse his injury. He was injured in the third quarter of Week 2’s win over Detroit and has neither played nor practiced since.

While the injury reports from this week’s practices will shed some light on his availability, there are other factors in play with the Packers’ bye week on the horizon in Week 5. The long game may be best played if the Packers decide to hold out Adams against the Falcons and give him an additional two weeks to, using his own words, “get right” — especially given how effective the offense was against the Saints.

The Saints defense’s focus on Marquez Valdes-Scantling allowed Allen Lazard to get open often and deliver some excellent plays on his way to a career-high 147 receiving yards. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers also continued to make use of the Packers’ tight ends and running backs in the passing game, tagging at least five players with multiple passes for the third straight game to start the season.

There’s no doubt the Packers offense is stronger with Adams in the lineup, but the concerns about the receiving corps that lingered during his four-game absence last season are no longer present in 2020. Some of that is because of how established Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams now are as dual-threat backs, but the incorporation of Tyler Ervin has also helped enhance the attack. So, too, has the competition between tight ends Marcedes Lewis, Robert Tonyan and Jace Sternberger.

The Packers tout the NFL’s sixth-best passing offense through the first three games with 288 passing yards per contest, but they rank second in total yards of offense (459.7), second in rushing yards (171.7) and first in points (40.7).
