Jordan Poyer Latest News
Returning to practice Tuesday
Poyer (thumb) said Monday that he expects to resume practicing Tuesday, C. Isaiah Smalls of The Miami Herald reports. Poyer revealed Monday that his hand cast is due to a fracture on the bottom of his right thumb, per David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, but he's now nearly recovered from the injury. The starting safety's final chance to suit up for preseason action will come Friday on the road against Tampa Bay.
Gets cast on right hand
David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that Poyer was participating in drills Monday with a club/cast on his right hand. Poyer will likely be held out of the Dolphins' final two preseason games while he recovers from his hand injury. The 2013 seventh-round pick signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins in March after spending the last seven seasons with the Bills. Poyer is slated to serve as Miami's starting strong safety and work alongside free safety Jevon Holland in the secondary.
Misses Monday's practice
Poyer (undisclosed) was held out of Monday's camp session, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Poyer, who's entering his 12th season in the NFL, was brought in by Miami earlier in the offseason to play alongside Jevon Holland in the Dolphins' secondary. Both the nature and severity of Poyer's injury are currently unknown, but he's expected to serve as Miami's top strong safety once he returns to the field.
Joining Miami
The Dolphins and Poyer agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Poyer will stay in the AFC East after spending the previous seven seasons with the Bills before being released by Buffalo in a cap move last week. Poyer turns 33 years old next month but did make the Pro Bowl in 2022 after being named a first-team All-Pro in 2021. Last season, Poyer started 16 games and finished with 100 tackles (66 solo), including one sack, and four pass breakups. It was his first season without an interception since 2016 with the Browns.
Set to be released
The Bills will release Poyer on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network the Bills will move on from the veteran safety in an effort to open up salary-cap space ahead of free agency. Poyer, who had one season remaining on a two-year, $12.5 million deal that he signed last March, is coming off a 2023 campaign in which he racked up 101 tackles and one sack in 16 contests.
Eight tackles in win
Poyer tied with Terrel Bernard for the most tackles in Thursday's game, and the former is second behind the latter in total tackles on the year with 42. Poyer is on pace to surpass his total tackles mark of 63 last year and could crack 100-plus tackles for the first time since 2020. He'll look to add to his numbers in Week 9 against the Bengals.
