Tom Coughlin, the two-time Super Bowl winning head coach of the New York Giants and more recently the Executive VP of the Jacksonville Jaguars suffered four fractured ribs, a slightly punctured lung, and needed stitches in his head following a bicycle accident last weekend in Jacksonville.
The report, coming from ESPN, proclaims that Coughlin, 73-years-old, originally went home after suffering his injuries, but was eventually convinced by his family to go to the hospital. Coughlin would spend the night at Baptist Health after undergoing X-rays and a CT scan.
Per Coughlin’s accounts, another man on a racing bike, “comes out of nowhere and clips the front of my bike.” ESPN added that Coughlin claimed he thought he was aware of his surroundings, until being blindsided.
Doctors have reportedly told Coughlin he will have an approximate four-to-six week recovery.

Coughlin is Arguably the Best HC in Giants History
In all, Coughlin spent 15 years with the Giants organization. Originally, he served as an assistant to Bill Parcells back in the late 80s and early 90s, where the then-wide receiver coach helped lead the G-Men to a Super Bowl XXV victory against the Buffalo Bills.
However, Coughlin’s most notable claim to fame comes while being the main man in charge of Big Blue. Returning to the team in 2004, this time in a head coaching role, Coughlin inherited a 4-12 football team and the fourth overall draft pick. Coughlin and the Giants would use the pick to select now-Colts quarterback Philip Rivers, eventually using him as collateral to acquire the services of a young signal-caller by the name of Eli Manning. The rest is history.
The two went on to capture two Super Bowl victories over a five-year span (2007, 2011). Both of which came as underdogs against the modern-day dynasty known as the New England Patriots.
On January 4, 2016, after 11 highly-memorable and productive years at the helm, Coughlin announced his resignation as head coach of the New York Football Giants. A decision that Coughlin later admitted was due to him being forced out by higher-ups.
Coughlin finished his Giants career with a .531 winning percentage and is a member of New York’s Ring of Honor.
The 1st HC in Jaguars History
Interestingly enough, Coughlin owned the same exact winning percentage during his time as a head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a role in which he served from 1995 through 2002. Coughlin was the first coach in the franchise’s history and eventually built them up into an AFC juggernaut. He would go on to lead the not-so-distant expansion team to two Conference Championship game appearances.
Coughlin returned to Jacksonville following his time in New York, this time as the executive vice president of football operations, and once again helped the team reach an AFC Championship. However, he was later relieved of his duties in mid-December of 2019 following an NFLPA grievance.
