Kadarius Toney Snap Count vs. Titans Raises Questions

After an inconsistent rookie season in 2021, New York Giants wide receiver Kadarius Toney is not off to a hot start in 2022.

Toney, a first-round pick in last year’s draft, only played two snaps in the first half of New York’s matchup with the Titans on Sunday afternoon.

Via Jordan Raanan of ESPN:

One of Toney’s two snaps came after second-round rookie wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson went down with a knee injury. Late in the second quarter, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News painted a discouraging picture of Toney on the Giants’ sideline.

“Kadarius Toney is sitting by himself on a bench nowhere close to the rest of the receivers and offense,” Leonard tweeted. “He’s been relegated to 2 snaps so far today, seems to be struggling with it.”

License Plate Guy shared a video of Toney on the sideline via Twitter:

Although he underwent offseason knee surgery and missed some time during training camp, Toney was not listed on the injury report heading into Week 1. New York’s leading receiver in the first half was Richie James, who finished with five catches for 59 yards.

When Toney finally recorded his first touch of the 2022 season in the fourth quarter, he broke several tackles while ripping off a 19-yard rush.

Toney finished the game with two rushing attempts for 23 yards and zero receptions.

Toney, 22, had a litany on injuries as a rookie. Even when he was healthy enough to play, he rarely started. The Florida product only started four of the 10 games in which he appeared, finishing the season with 39 receptions for 420 yards and zero touchdowns.

Giants fans were hoping to see more of Toney in Year 2, but this is not an encouraging start.

Giants See Vintage Versions of Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard

After a scoreless first half, the Giants got some explosive plays from a couple of their most experienced playmakers. Early in the third quarter, running back Saquon Barkley ripped off this 68-yard run.

A few plays later, Barkley dove into the end zone for a four-yard touchdown.

On the next Giants possession, quarterback Daniel Jones looked deep and found wide receiver Sterling Shepard open for a 65-yard touchdown.

Barkley and Shepard are both candidates to have a rebound season in 2022. Barkley is another year removed from his ACL injury and coming off a season in which he rushed for less than 600 yards, while Shepard is roughly nine months removed from a season-ending Achilles injury.

Daniel Jones Overcomes Late INT to Lead Comeback

After throwing an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter, Daniel Jones orchestrated a touchdown drive that ultimately gave the Giants the lead in the final two minutes of action.

Here’s Jones’ touchdown strike to tight end Chris Myarick, followed by Saquon Barkley’s game-winning two-point conversion.

The Titans drove down the field after this and got within field goal range, but kicker Randy Bullock’s 47-yard attempt to win the game sailed wide.

Jones completed 17 of his 21 pass attempts for 188 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the win. Barkley exploded for 194 total yards on 23 total touches.
