The New York Jets have taken the next step in adding some serious depth to their roster.

Former NFL player and current SNY analyst, Leger Douzable, revealed that Gang Green has made “contract offers” to both Kwon Alexander and Larry Ogunjobi in free agency.

Some Juicy Details

During a live Twitter spaces, Douzable and Bleacher Report lead draft analyst Connor Rogers broke down the 2022 Jets draft class and took questions from listeners.

Two free agents that have each worked out for the Jets but we haven’t heard much about recently are Alexander and Ogunjobi.

Douzable provided an update when asked by Rogers about their situations:

“From my sources, they have been offered deals and it is almost a take it or leave it [situation].”

The Jets Central YouTube page did a full video on this news and talked about the pros and cons of a potential move.

What It All Means

I’ve heard a few Jets fans respond to these reports by saying, what the heck is taking so long? Why haven’t they signed yet?

Here are a few thoughts.

Firstly there is no rush, neither of these veterans wants to rush and participate in voluntary OTAs this month when they know those same contract offers will be there in a month and a half when training camp arrives.

Secondly, since there is no rush, why not wait and see what other offers come in?

That is especially true for Ogunjobi who had a $40.5 million multi-year contract in his grasp and lost it due to a failed physical.

It is hard for him to accept that money won’t be coming any time soon. So he will likely be forced to sign a one-year prove-it deal once again in 2022 to reestablish his market heading into 2023.

That kind of adjustment takes time to settle in and marinate.

If you wait who knows what kinds of injuries could come out of nowhere that changes the market drastically and perhaps you can squeeze out a few more pennies from another team.

As Douzable noted these offers have been made and from how he understands it, they’re “take it or leave it” deals.

In other words, general manager Joe Douglas has drawn a line in the sand and they can either join the party at the amount he wants or they can play elsewhere.

Either addition would ensure depth at two key defensive spots at linebacker and defensive tackle.

According to the latest cap numbers the Jets have $9.9 million sitting in the bank which is good enough to rank 25th in the NFL.

Neither one of these free agent contracts is expected to be exorbitant in any way. They will probably be low base salaries with built-in incentives that could reach higher stratospheres.
