As soon as the new league year officially kicked off on Wednesday, March 16 at 4 pm ET, Joe Douglas got to work.
The New York Jets traded away linebacker Blake Cashman to the Houston Texans in exchange for a sixth-round draft choice in 2023. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network was the first to share the news on social media.

A Fantastic Value Deal
Douglas said he was willing to make a bold trade, but I’m not sure this is what everyone had in mind.
Although he got a great value for a player that was unlikely to make the roster in 2022.
Cashman initially entered the league as the No. 157 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Minnesota.
Unfortunately, the injury issues that plagued him in college followed him into the pros.
In three seasons Cashman has yet to complete half a season, let alone a full campaign:
- Missed 35 games
- 49 combined tackles
Joe Douglas Is a Freaking Wizard
You can fault Douglas for a lot of things during his tenure as the general manager of the Jets, but one thing that can never be questioned again is his ability to maximize trades.
The rest of Twitter celebrated getting quite frankly anything for the youngster via trade.
If you simply search for Blake Cashman on Twitter you’ll find even more takes on this wizardy.
Douglas consistently has gotten way more in return than people expected in almost every trade he has ever made.
In his two-plus years running the shop, Douglas has executed 16 player trades, and here is a look at all the ones that featured sending players away.
2019
- Parry Nickerson for a conditional seventh-round draft choice (conditions not met)
- Leonard Williams for a 2020 third-rounder and a 2021 fifth-rounder
2020
- Jamal Adams and a 2022 fourth-rounder for a 2021 first-rounder, 2021 third-rounder, and a 2022 first-rounder (Bradley McDougald)
- Jordan Willis and a 2021 seventh-rounder for a 2022 sixth-rounder
- Avery Williamson and a 2022 seventh-rounder for a 2022 fifth-rounder
- Steve McLendon and a 2023 seventh for a 2022 sixth-rounder
2021
- Sam Darnold for a 2021 sixth-rounder and a second and fourth-rounder in 2022
- Chris Herndon and a 2022 sixth-rounder for a 2022 fourth-rounder
Now the next move Jets fans will be hoping for will include Douglas showing he can acquire talent just as well as he can send it away.
Gang Green is armed and dangerous with draft capital and they have their pick of the litter as it pertains to the trade market.
Several interesting names are hanging out there at a variety of key positions at EDGE rusher, on the defensive line, and of course at wide receiver.
The one move you may want to keep an eye out for revolves around Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. While most thought when he got franchise-tagged for a second consecutive year he would be off the table, in the wise words of Lee Corso, not so fast my friends.
There is some smoke out there that perhaps the Bucs could consider a tag-and-trade this offseason to create some cap space. That could be the trade the Jets have been waiting to pull the trigger on.
