Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree has been issued a citation charging him with misdemeanor assault following an alleged altercation with a Walgreens pharmacy employee in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a report from ESPN.

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Central time on January 2 after a verbal altercation between the 20-year-old male employee and some individuals who had entered the store, according to Metro Nashville Police.

Per the citation, following the argument, “the subjects then reentered the store with Dupree, who allegedly grabbed the employee and his phone and then was involved in a physical altercation with the employee before leaving,” ESPN detailed.

A Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson told The Tennessean that the employee used his phone to film during the incident.

A 20-year-old male employee of Walgreens was treated for a cut on his forehead and a 21-year-old female employee was treated for a cut to her hand, according to an MNPD statement.

According to police, Dupree and his attorney met with detectives Tuesday morning, January 4, and he is scheduled to report for booking in three weeks.

Police received a call about the fight at 8:06 p.m. central time, according to the Nashville PD statement. Police were dispatched but, upon arrival, Dupree and others alleged to be involved had left.

According to the Tennessean, Dupree and his attorney met with detectives on January 4. Police said they issued a citation for the misdemeanor and that Dupree is due to report for booking in three weeks.

Dupree’s current NFL team, the Tennessee Titans, said in a statement to ESPN that they are “aware of the situation and are gathering additional information.”

Since Dupree Left

The Steelers were dealing with a serious salary cap crunch in 2021, and letting Dupree walk as a free agent was a necessary evil. In March 2021, Dupree signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Titans.

The team prepared for Dupree’s departure by selecting Alex Highsmith in the 2020 NFL draft. Highsmith has come on nicely in his second year with the Steelers and exceeded Dupree’s second season.

Before the 2021 NFL season even began, Bleacher Report‘s Chris Roling named Dupree one of the nine worst decisions of the offseason. Roling cited Dupree’s success wasn’t so much the player as the players around him, i.e., linebacker T.J. Watt and tackle Cam Heyward.

After recovering from a torn ACL he sustained in Pittsburgh toward the latter part of the 2020 season, Dupree had a slow start with the Titans. He has a career-low 3.0 sacks in 10 games (five starts). According to ESPN’s Turron Davenport, Dupree suffered an abdominal injury versus the New Orleans Saints on November 13 and spent a month on injured reserve.

The Titans activated him from injured reserve just in time to take on his former Pittsburgh Steelers team on December 19. Per Pro Football Reference, Dupree notched 1.0 sack, two tackles and a quarterback hit in return to Heinz Field.
