Dallas Radio Hosts Called Out for 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey Comments

Getty Christian McCaffrey walks into the end zone on January 14 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Two Dallas radio show hosts are under fire for comments directed toward San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

49ers fans slammed the radio personalities, Bryan Broaddus and Gavin Dawson of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, for insinuating that an injury to McCaffrey “would be good” for the Cowboys, who play San Francisco on January 22 in an NFC divisional playoff game.

“Pathetic radio sports pundits from Dallas wishing an injury on CMC, terrible fans Cowboys nation have,” tweeted one fan. “Do better Dallas.”

“Clear indication they believe it’s their only chance of winning,” another fan tweeted in reaction to the soundbite.

“I live near Dallas and heard it,” another fan tweeted. “I wouldn’t say he was totally serious, but I don’t believe he was necessarily joking either. Also, they were extremely nervous about the 49ers prior to last week, but now have a little bit of false hope after that “big” win against the Bucs..lol.”

On the January 17 episode of their show, “GBag Nation,” Broaddus seemed to complain about McCaffrey, who played for the Carolina Panthers before a trade to San Francisco on October 21, shedding his past as an oft-injured player.

“He’s healthy now, in Carolina he couldn’t stay healthy, now he never gets hurt,” Broaddus is heard in a clip captured by SF Gate

“We could use an injury, we really could,” Dawson replies.

Broaddus is then heard saying in the clip: “Yeah, hamstring would be good,” Broaddus says.

Hosts Post Apology Following Fallout From Remarks

Broaddus, a former Cowboys staff writer, apologized January 19 on Twitter.

“Player has a history of not being healthy or available for his team. He’s done a great job of taking care of that while in SF. Would never wish that on any player. I worked in this league way too long for that,” Broaddus tweeted, adding, “I am sorry this even happened. Not my intent. My hope it’s a great game.”

Later in the day, Dawson seemed to adopt a more defensive tone in this response.

“So let me get this right..a take about injuries in sports have you outraged…and you watch football every weekend? Got it. Maybe I’m outraged that you incentivize life threatening injuries by even watching,” Dawson tweeted.

He followed up that tweet with, “A hammy is nothing. Dear Lord I am not wishing for actual human suffering. I’ve been on record for years that if injuries have to be a part of a sport it’s better if they happen to the opposition right before you play them. Get over it.”

Other Fans Focus on the Game Itself

One fan predicted McCaffrey, who had his most productive season since 2019 and has 10 rushing and receiving touchdowns since joining the 49ers, will tear up the Cowboys. San Francisco is 11-0 in games McCaffrey, according to CBS Sports.

“CMC running for 200 and celebrating with crutches,” the fan tweeted.

Another fan concurred, tweeting: “He’s going to go off Sunday. Probably will have his best game to date.”

“I’m really gonna enjoy watching Christian McCaffrey shred Dallas’ defense now that those clowns over at @1053thefan wished an injury on him. What a disgrace,” another fan wrote.

Even a Cowboys fan couldn’t defend the hosts’ rhetoric. “Pathetic, if the Cowboys are going to beat the 49ers I personally want it to be with everyone healthy. I’m sure Cowboys players feel the same way as well as 49er players,” the fan tweeted.
