Buccaneers Make Move for ‘Coveted’ QB After Rams Attempt to Sign Him

Getty The Buccaneers are signing QB John Wolford to the 53-man roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are blocking the Los Angeles Rams from signing one of Los Angeles’ former quarterbacks.

The Buccaneers are promoting quarterback John Wolford from the practice squad to their active roster, The Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud reported on Tuesday, October 31.

“Several quarterback-needy teams wanted to sign John Wolford from the Bucs practice squad, but he has decided to remain with Tampa Bay,” Stroud wrote. “Wolford, 28, is expected to be signed to the Bucs’ 53-man roster today.”

Wolford’s deal is for one year, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reported.

“It’s just a one-year deal for the Bucs and QB John Wolford — sometimes these midyear practice-squad promotions can include the next year in a contract, but it’s just for the rest of the 2023 season,” Auman posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rams Wanted to Sign John Wolford After Matthew Stafford Injury

The move comes shortly after the Rams attempted to sign Wolford following Matthew Stafford‘s injury against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.

“The Rams are thin at the position after announcing Matthew Stafford has a sprained UCL in the thumb of his throwing hand,” Stroud wrote. “Brett Rypien is the backup, but rookie Stetson Bennett is on the non-football injury list.”

Wolford has been with the Buccaneers during the entire season as a member of the practice squad. He initially was released at the conclusion of the preseason before getting signed to the practice squad. The Buccaneers clearly feel strongly about Wolford considering they’re willing to use a roster spot on him despite featuring Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask as the top two quarterbacks.

The 28-year-old Wolford is actually best known for his tenure with the Rams, spending three seasons as the backup quarterback behind starters Jared Goff and Stafford, from 2020 to 2022.

Wolford saw minimal playing time during his three seasons in Los Angeles, appearing in seven games with four starts. He went 2-2 as a starting quarterback, and he has thrown 1 touchdown against 5 interceptions for 626 passing yards and a 59.2 passer rating. It’s worth noting that he actually started in place of the injured Goff in the Rams’ wild-card playoff win over the Seattle Seahawks in January 2021.

Former Bucs RB Leonard Fournette Signs With Bills

Former Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette is signing with a new team.

Fournette is signing with the Buffalo Bills, according to an October 30 post on X by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz. The team made it official the following day.

“Leonard Fournette tells me he’s in Buffalo and is planning to sign with the Bills today, pending a physical,” Schultz posted on X. “‘Playoff Lenny’ had nearly 1,200 all-purpose yards, including a career-high 523 receiving yards, along with 6 TDs last season.”

Fournette will begin his stint with the Bills on their practice squad.

The 28-year-old is best known for his stint with the Buccaneers, starting during the team’s playoff run to a Super Bowl victory at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Fournette racked up 300 yards on 4.7 yards per carry during the Buccaneers’ playoff run. He continued to start for Tampa Bay over the next two seasons before his release during the 2023 offseason.
