Madden 22 featuring Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes on the cover breaks from tradition in more ways than one.

Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes display a new tone for the Madden video game cover beside the EA Sports going with two players on the cover for the first time in a decade.

Madden usually features a superstar player in action or getting pumped up to play — such as Antonio Brown in 2018. This time, Madden shows Brady and Mahomes chilling on a bench, looking into the camera.

EA Sports also promises a new feel for Madden in its release trailer. “This is Madden like you’ve never seen it … It’s a whole new vibe with all-new dynamic gameday,” the company stated.

EA Sports released its latest Madden cover on Thursday, and the video game itself will likely be released in August as it typically is each year. Brady made his first and only Madden cover appearance in 2017 for Madden 18. Mahomes landed on the cover in 2019 for Madden 19. Last season’s Madden featured Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The video game company made clear earlier in the week who would be on the cover in it’s preview video.

“Even former cover athlete Peyton Hillis didn’t see this coming,” EA Sports Tweeted with its video. Hillis, a fullback, was the Madden 12 cover athlete after a big 2010 season with the Cleveland Browns. The Madden 22 video features two goats as Brady is considered the “greatest of all time”and Mahomes as the next one.

Madden, an NFL simulation video game, comes out with a new addition each season with updated teams from rosters to uniform and stadium details. The first edition came out as John Madden Football in 1988. The series is named for Madden, a Hall of Fame head coach and broadcaster, who coached the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s followed by a nearly 30-year broadcasting career from 1979 to 2008.

Brady-Mahomes Sighting Confirmed

WFLA’s Dan Lucas shared a photo and video of the potential Brady and Mahomes Madden repeat when the two met in April on the field at Tampa’s Carrollwood Day School.

Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reported that a Carrollwood representative “would neither confirm nor deny speculation the quarterbacks were on the north Tampa campus shooting a commercial” that day.

Independent NFL reporter Dov Kleiman confirmed on Monday that the school did host Brady and Mahomes for the photoshoot.

Brady-Mahomes Mania For Super Bowl LV

The hype of Brady-Mahomes built up in the weeks leading up to Super Bowl LV as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took on the Kansas City Chiefs. Brady has been known as the “greatest of all time” while Mahomes appears to be next in line for that title.

Brady threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns as the Bucs beat the Chiefs 31-9. Tampa’s defense didn’t let Mahomes look like Mahomes that night, thwarting the epic two GOATS storyline for that night.

NFL Films nonetheless captured the two GOATS’ conversation after the Big Game. “You’re a legend man,” Mahomes told Brady.

“You’re a stud, bro,” Brady replied.

Something Will Have to Give

If both Brady and Mahomes land on the Madden 22 cover, something will have to give as the two excelled the previous times they ended up on the cover.

Brady led the Patriots to a win in Super Bowl LIII, and Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LIV victory. Both the Bucs and Chiefs are considered heavy favorites to win the Super Bowl this coming season.

Tampa returns all 22 starters from its 2020 championship team, which hasn’t been done since the 1979 Oakland Raiders. The Chiefs return many of their key players but lost wide receiver Sammy Watkins to the Ravens.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell ranked the Bucs at No. 1 for the best offseason in a June 8 article. He couldn’t find any true weaknesses in the Bucs’ offseason other than getting older. Barnwell ranked the Chiefs at No. 6 and noted the team’s moves to bolster the offensive line as a key improvement.
