Steph Curry is golden, and his amazing shot over France’s Victor Wembanyama in the gold medal game was an instant classic.
The Golden State Warriors star helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the Paris Olympics on August 10, exploding at the end to spark the 98-87 victory. Curry made four three-pointers over the final 2:48 of the game, keeping the host country from getting within striking distance as the American team won their fifth straight gold medal.
Curry also turned in the team’s most viral moment, unleashing a high-arcing shot over the outstretched arms of France’s 7-foot-4 star.
Steph Curry Finishes Strong for Team USA
Curry had a rocky start to his run at the Paris Olympics but turned in two iconic performances with the gold medal on the line. He scored 36 points in the team’s semifinal win over Serbia, helping Team USA come back from a 17-point deficit to reach Saturday’s gold medal game.
Curry connected on eight three-pointers in the gold medal game, scoring 24 total points including 12 in the final 2:48 of the fourth quarter to ice the win.
Curry had an answer for every punch from France down the final stretch. After Wembanyama made a tip shot to cut Team USA’s lead to three points with 2:58 remaining, Curry nailed a three-pointer to put them back up six points.
When France’s Nando De Colo made a jump shot with 2:11 remaining to cut Team USA’s lead to six, Curry answered with another three-pointer. After France got a quick answer with a three-pointer of their own from Nicolas Batum, Curry drained another three to extend the lead back to nine points.
Steph Curry Speaks Out After Joining Exclusive Club
After winning the gold medal, Curry said it was a game he would never forget. At age 36, Curry represented the United States at the Olympics for the first time in his career.
“I’ve been blessed to play basketball at a high level for a very long time,” Curry said after the game, via NBC News. “This ranks very high in terms of the excitement and the sense of relief in getting to the finish line.”
Curry added that the game was a difficult test, facing France in their home building with a group of NBA players who only had a few weeks together on the court before the start of the Paris Olympics.
Curry noted that Team USA had some struggles early in the gold medal game, but pulled through when it mattered most.
“There was a little bit of that a new team like we have, no matter how much talent we have, we got a little out of sorts down the stretch,” Curry said. “Turned the ball over, taking quick shots and obviously it was a big shot to put us up six, that kind of settled everything and then the rhythm, the avalanche came and thankfully the other three went in but that was an unbelievable moment.”
The NBC News report noted that Saturday’s gold medal win put Curry in rare company.
“The U.S. victory also elevated the Golden State Warriors star Curry to a select club,” the report noted. “He’s now among nine players who can boast of having a NBA championship ring, regular season MVP honor, finals MVP award and an Olympic gold medal.”
“That group includes Curry, his Team USA colleagues James and Durant and Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal.”
