2010 HeavyMMA Awards: Best Fighter Twitter

Best MMA Fighter Twitter

Winner:  Miguel Torres, aka @MiguelTorresMMA: At once a fountain of wisdom and a candid view into the mind of a fighter, Miguel Torres and his Twitter account became one of the true must-follows in the world of mixed martial arts last year. Torres tweets prolificly and profoundly, interspersing bits of knowledge with comic relief and true-blue trash talking.  He’s pretty hilarious and when he tweets of his love for Mexican food, you can almost hear the sincerity.  Scanning your timeline you might just find something like this, “Full day of training at the gym, so many great training partners. Feeling lucky, kinda like a whore in a cucumber patch.”  Well, that’s just Miguel.  The latter part of 2010 saw Torres detailing his training camp with Firas Zahabi while preparing for his UFC debut. Sleeping on floors, working in the gym and spending Christmas away from his loved ones were just part of the sacrifice Torres is going through in order to become a UFC champion, and his openness and honesty on Twitter are a rare look into the mind of a fighter trying to get back on top.

Honorable Mention:

– Sean McCorkle, aka @bigsexymccorkle: Sean McCorkle came out of nowhere in 2010, using the power of Twitter to elevate his preliminary about with Stefan Struve to co-main event of UFC 124, one of the biggest events of the year. 95% childish insults and 5% pure awesome, McCorkle’s Twitter account became one of the true must-follows for MMA fans and media alike in 2010.

– Chael Sonnen, aka @sonnench: The only thing keeping Chael Sonnen out of the top spot here is his lack of posting. He’ll go months between tweets, but more than makes up for the downtime when he decides to post something. Sonnen unleashed the kind of verbal barbs that made him a superstar, often mixing borderline-racist comments with true hilarity.

– Phil Baroni, aka @philbaroni: Another must follow Twitter account belongs to “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni.  You’ll laugh, you’ll cry…hell, sometimes you might even wonder if Phil’s okay.  You’ll know when he’s working out and you’ll know when he walks the dog.  You’ll also get a taste of just about everything that makes Baroni so awesome.  The NYBA is as real as they come and his Twitter is 100% vintage Phil Baroni.
