Daytona 500 Qualifying Preview

Racers get started on single-car qualifying on Wednesday, February 16, for the Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway. The top 10 finishers in round one get a shot in the final round to nab front row spots for the Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Remaining racers from the qualifier will race in the Bluegreen Vacation Duels on Thursday, February 17. That determines remaining rows for the Daytona 500.

Racers in contention for the top spots include Greg Biffle, Jacques Villeneuve, J.J. Yeley, Kaz Grala, Noah Gragson, and Timmy Hill.

Biffle returns to NASCAR Cup Series competition after a five-year absence. His car, a Chevrolet Camaro, was unveiled on social media on Monday, February 14.

“I can’t forget about 2019 — I ran a [NASCAR] truck race — and that’s been luring me back,” Biffle said per NASCAR wire service’s Reid Spencer. “I’ve been talking to (team owner) John (Cohen) for a couple of years now, and I told him, ‘If you get a program put together, I’ll come help you,’ and here we are. So I’m glad to be back.”

Villeneuve, a Formula 1 racer who won an Indianapolis 500 title in 1995, also returns to Daytona but after a longer absence than Biffle. Villeneuve seeks to become the first former Formula 1 racer to make the Daytona 500 according to NBC Sports’ Dustin Long. Villeneuve last attempted the feat in 2008 but missed the cut.

“It’s a little bit of a gamble when you have to qualify during the Duels,” Villeneuve said per Long. “You could be the quickest car out there and still get caught out. When I tried to qualify years ago … the car was quick, but then I got caught up in a crash and then you don’t make the show. It’s very stressful.”

Yeley, who has been a journeyman for much of his career, will race with MBM Motorsports for the Daytona 500. His Ford Mustang features Hex.com as the main sponsor.

Hill will also race for MBM Motorsports. His Mustang features Bumper.com as a sponsor.

Grala joined forces with Floyd Mayweather’s The Money Team Racing for the Daytona 500 and beyond. Grala seeks the second Daytona 500 start of his career.

Gragson will race for three different teams during the 2022 season. For the Daytona 500, that will be Beard Motorsports.

“It’s going to be a challenge out there,” Gragson said per NASCAR.com’s Terrin Waack. “But I really don’t have any expectations going into the season other than learning. And then once we get a few races down the road, we can kind of regroup and reevaluate where we’re at on speed and we’ll have a clearer vision on what’s a realistic expectation.”
