Eagles vs Falcons Preview
Both teams finished at the bottom of their respective divisions last year, and both are looking to make leaps this season. Philly finished with a 4-11-1 mark, while the Falcons ended the season at 4-12.
The Falcons have a new head coach in Arthur Smith, and they also have veteran quarterback Matt Ryan returning under center for his 14th season with the team. The stalwart veteran has started 14 or more games every season he has played for the team, and he threw more than anyone in the game did last year, netting 407 completions on 626 attempts. Ryan threw for 4581 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2020, and while he lost veteran wideout Julio Jones, he did get one of the best tight end prospects in recent memory.
In addition to Calvin Ridley, Ryan will have running back Mike Davis, who could be a beast out of the backfield while also helping in the passing game, along with rookie TE Kyle Pitts, who most expect to be a monster after the catch.
“You try to get a feel for a guy’s strengths as quick as possible,” Ryan said about Pitts. ”I think he’s done a great job. He’s a sponge, there’s no question about it. He listens and he’s constantly taking in information.”
On the other side, the Eagles will also be led a rookie coach in Nick Sirianni. Second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts will take over the team this year, and Gardner Minshew will be waiting in the wings if Hurts doesn’t play well. Hurts had four starts last year, and he completed 52% of his passes for 1,061 yards, six touchdowns and for interceptions. He also ran for 354 yards and three scores.
On defense, Philadelphia allowed 237.4 yards per game through the air last season, along with 26.1 points per contest. The secondary will be led by vets Darius Slay and Steve Nelson, and rookie fourth-rounder Zech McPhearson could be asked to contribute significantly. They will be tested out of the gate here against Ryan and company.
“Going against Matt Ryan, that’s a big-time challenge because there’s not a lot of looks that this guy hasn’t seen,” new Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said heading into their Week 1 matchup. “There’s not a lot of coverage — not any coverage that this guy hasn’t seen. And he’s got a very fast processor, so that’s why he’s a top ten guy. And he has weapons.”
The Eagles are 3-2 in their last five games against the Falcons.
